its a compressed archive like .rar or .zip
i dont think winzip handles 7z but im sure winrar does
or http://www.7-zip.org/
just extract the contents of the file to a folder of your choosing and go from there

Correct, winrar and 7zip can handle 7z files.
Extract it to say, C:/GCQL or C:/DarkSpace. Then run GCQL.exe (make a shortcut if you want). If that works, you need to INSTANTLY (the moment you get into the lobby), click the update button. If you screw that up, then you're on your own, as it says in big capitol letters when you enter the lobby:
- IMPORTANT: Version 1.483 has been released, you MUST press the "UPDATE" button at the top of the lobby to properly update DarkSpace.

Ok I did all that and still came up with the same error message but the the progress window locked up. Now what?

There's something wrong with your system if that doesn't work...
I'm stuck...
It's definatly not darkspace...

I've got a solution, it worked for me.
If you have a 64-bit proccessor, you NEED windows x64 edition.
If you dont have it, your computer will not work with darkspace.
Windows x64 is a free download if you have XP professional.

Ok I think I may have found the problem. The Windows firewall was off and there was Macaffee and now I find out there is a Norton Internet Worm Protection on and its listed as a firewal. I can't seem to find it on this computer to shut it off. Can anyone help?

Well, since you have both macafee and norton on your pc, I would suggest the following. Unscrew one of your case panels, then take a heavy earth magnet (preferable one carved from the very core of the earth), move it from side to side in a karate kid:wax on/wax off motion in the general area of your harddrive, restart, reinstall, pray to the almightly spaghetti monster.
That should solve your problem.

On very slow connections, aka 56k the progress window can appear to lock up, how long have you left it for? Sometimes it can take 10 - 20 minutes before it will update.

Yeah the only norton program I can see is Antivirus. Plus Antivirus is not working right.

sidequestion...
how "old" is your system
aka. since when is the OS installed??
sometimes, a complete wipe is a wise method
i, for myself, renew the OS of my "machines" (at least) once every year
sometimes, i renew the hardware 2

got same problem , execpt with absolutely no error codes , while running the trial (under a demo account) on my win XP (which runs perfectly EII, Eve, AO, WoW, L2, DDO etc...)
I click on "Lobby", and it just quits, sillily.
