Defense mode was never meant to be used in combat.

this will make ICC far more easy to balance.

Currently, ICC is balanced to the extream ICC player. The one that uses defense mode, specific shield arc mode changes, application of different shields per arc for defense.

Current ICC balances ICC vets vs ugto and kluth. The problem with that is ICC noobs dont stand a chance in hell.

I say, go into beta and test. Provide meaningful feedback with good data. Help.

This, i believe, is a step in the right direction. Ive been flyin without defense mode in combat every since i heard it was on its way out. Its a little tough, but not impossible to win in the current version without def mode.

May i also point out most every ICC ship has HUGE ammount of energy now without def mode? what shall we do about that?

With most ships it already makes no sense to use Def mode in combat, unless you are not moving and sniping, or about to leave combat soon and squeeze out some more seconds.
Exeptions are Stations which might be even more useless now.
Defense mode helped ICC stations which are known to be weak, but have a large enrgy pool.

Whats the thought behind this? Help noobs who forget to activate their shields, or do you think ICC was secretly op with def mode?
I dont see the point.

5% + is nice, but making the game more simple once more is not.

Edit:
Oh wait a minute, out of combat defmode will automaticaly activate without any energy consumption?! When are we out of combat? If no enemy is close or if we are not shot?
Lets see, this might be a huge buff to icc in the end.

I was the one who made the change (with feedback from the other devs), so I'll divulge my thought process on the matter.

Firstly, Defense Mode was added in the previous version as a means to counter the ability for K'Luth and UGTO to repair very quickly at depot planets. The AOE repair field wasn't completed yet, so we thought Defense Mode would add a bit of flavour.

Now that we've solved the depot problem, I find that balancing ICC is difficult because of Defense Mode. I cannot buff the HP or Regen, because Defense Mode amplifies the change, which greatly increases the gap between usable and un-usable for new players and existing ones.

By moving Defense Mode to the OOC timer, we can balance shields in-combat a lot easier via buffing the existing properties. It also has the benefits of making ICC a lot less macro intense which is good for new players, and the AI can now use it.

The buff to shields is because of the loss of Defense Mode in combat. This coupled with the UGTO armor decrease and the K'Luth cloak changes should make everything a little bit more balanced.

Just to clarify, "out of combat" means you have not fired or been fired upon in the last 30 seconds.

There's a nice timer in the top left in beta. It's quite good.

I guess thats sound logic, i think stat shield recharging might need to be looked at though like peri said sice they currently have a veryvery slow recharge without defence mode . This will definitely take some getting used to, but if it helps with balance im all for it

im going to miss it but i can live. the only thing i ask is to make shere that the stations are not to weak as Perihelion sayed because i use defence mode in the stations all the time it the only way they stay alive. unless your jumped by 5 siphons.

exacltly what i was trying to say panth.

For once, I 100000000000% agree with you here. This is going to be a very very good thing for ICC.

youre lucky they didn't implement my suggestions of a shield-recharge

i suggested that the entire ship turn off to recharge the shields to enforce the "out of combat only"

Thanks Jack, this is all we've ever really wanted: shield regen boost outside of combat, and a boost to our shields' durability.
