When mining, both ships have to be facing the planet which makes it very difficult to escape from a surprise attack. Could it be possible to have the mining beams work without facing the planet? Also, could the Extractor have better defence such as armor/shield or an early warning system such as a long range sensor to give them a chance to escape?

This is only a problem on large planets.
Medium and small still allow you to mine at the arc angle and therefor allow you a instant E-jump.
About the sensors, even if in the event the gave it a 20K gu sensor range. it would get exploited.
End even if it had one it only would give you 4 more seconds if the enemy is jumping to your location, doze a little of and your still the same.
About the armor; i would only consider one full armor a option, but even in that case i find that a waste of spawn resources.
You mine for credits, you either do it in the safety of a well defended planet with a dictorfield giving you extra seconds to escape. Or if you don't care to lose the +/-10 negative prestige the death would give you.
If you want to mine, grab a extractor.
If you want to resupply a front line base with resources, grab a transport; same amount of cargo slots, and overall better in defense and PD armament.
And remember
- Do not attack engineers
- Do not attack extractors
- Do not bomb mining planets
- Do not capture shipyard planets
(ok on occasions i break this last rule. but thats because i usually build two shipyards for one faction and than switch over to the other faction and capture one of the two. its faster and more fun for all)

Ok, thanks. I'll remember that. I was just thinking what if the fleet had moved on to another system and left the engineer and extractor to rebuild the newly conquered system and a rogue enemy was on the hunt behind the boundry lines. That's ok, I guess I just have a different idea on how the extractor would work. I explained it in the post called anything and everything in the Bete testing folder after your reply. Anyway, thanks again, Beta is definitely different.
