This is an effect sample for a possible "Gatling" PD system, likely to be used by pirates.
Same effect with a pause.
Thoughts, feedback?

The effect itself looks good, but if you just treat it like a CL with a different texture it might produce an odd effect, since individual projectiles would seem to appear in midair and the whole stream of shells would appear to be rigidly guided towards their target.
It would be nice to see, say, a PD weapon that fired lots of cannon-type projectiles (as opposed to a laser that pretends to be a slug-thrower), but that would both be less efficient than an instant-hit laser since many projectiles would miss (creating impressive arcs of tracer across the battlefield), but more importantly it would chew up massive amounts of CPU.
...But hey, you barely noticed that pulse lasers in MechWarrior 4 were actually just normal lasers with a very similar animated texture to Draf's, so it will probably do, provided the beam duration is short.

I like it...I decided to blantly steal what you made and re-did it a bit.
in my own humble opinion, I think it seems more like what a short spurt of a Machine-gun type Point Defence would be like.
edit: I made it the twenty frame standard and tweaked some opacity. here it is

Fattie FTW.
sorry draf but that looks more like a gattling burst
still would be cool if UGTO had that.. wonder how effective it would be since the ICC PB are the ultimate defense... way shorter range perhaps?

Purely from a logical standpoint, it makes sense to shoot down projectiles with a large spread of small pellets.
I mean, Thats how alot of non-missile Anti-Air guns work - a bunch of rapidly firing lead properly aimed.
I mean, hell, the more I think a bout, the less sense it makes to try to cut a missile in half (or at least hit it) in space with a tiny laser that only lasts a couple of seconds with a limited range then to fire a hailstorm of bullets at it, either from a belt-fed weapon, or a shotgun like device that is tracked by Radar/Ladar. I guess Anti-Radar missiles would kinda defeat that purpose, but who the hell uses those? XD

lemme see if i can mix something up on benefit/negative on both types..
Pulse Beam
+ Long Range
+ Instant Hit
- Power drain
- Perhaps reload time??
- has minimum range?
Gattling PD
+ Low Power consumption
+ no minimum range?
- uses Ammo
- Smaller Range
how about something like that?

@ fattierob, yeah, thats the idea. The final effect would need more work; this is more a prototype for it.
It would use the same base effect as a laser, just with the gatling texture and sounds displayed instead of the laser textures.

Well Draf, why don't you make a thread with things that "could" be modified graphically if somebody stepped up, or that you(or whoever) would like it to be modified...I found this gatling thing particaly invigorating

Very good idea. However, if you wanted it to use the same mechanics as the lasers, you would have to drastically reduce the range to make it less evident that there's no tracking.

it would make a nice scanner for cloaked ships

If it looks to weird you could always go with a short quick very thin yellow beam that looks like its pulsing so fast it looks like a gatling gun, maybe with short delays between each burst. 1-2-3-4 pause 1-2-3-4 pause, ect.. with a pause being about 250ms or 333ms

I forsee a problem with this, in that the hit effect wouldn't match the hit area. It'd just end up looking like the beam hit (but pulsed).

would this beat shields because shields stop energy weapons and stuff like that not solid projectiles

Could you explain that a bit better? You mean the effect beams have when they hit a target? Coudn't it just be some of the bullets bouncing off the target, or passing through it?
