Well, here's a suggetion, why not introduce a new 'planet' type. What I'm thinking, and have suggested before, is why don't we have a station-type "planet"? It would be just like a planet in all respects, except for the model. The model of the station could either be not of one particular faction, or of a particular faction depending on its location in the MV. (i.e, Station type planets in Sol would have a UGTO design)
These stations would again, be like regular planets, and people would be able to build on em, drop troops on them, and the like. And how about they have a special bonus, like all the other planets? As in, +20 power, +20 Habitat, +20 Food. Their build points would correspond with the stations design, as in, there might be a build point on top of the station, and on the bottom, or on any protruding edifice.
And on a side note, why not have differently modeled Jumpgates? The current ones look ICC designed to me, why don't we have differently designed jumpgates, depending on the location of them? Then people could really know when they were in 'enemy territory'
Just some thoughts.

Station planet sounds too much work in my opinion...
The stargates do need a little re-vamping though.

Actually, if we ever introduce the 'flag' planet concept, this is something that may be an option.
The design I have in mind would be the familiar planet type, but with an additional model around it (as in a ring) that represents the extra defenses, construction and other capabilities.
The docking sections would need to be on scale with the station and other models, and I do think this is something that could be introduced with a minimum of extra coding or design.
This would also serve as a valid replacement for the homegates in the Metaverse.

Depending on which faction controls the system the jumpgate suits them
K'luth jumpgates cloak and uncloak
Ugto maybe have armourt and launch fighters
Icc have shields and missiles
Heh stupid idea but would be interesting.
But station planets sounds interesting

Surely, this idea has already come up at some point or another, but I'll bring it back up again.
Dyson Sphere systems anyone?

Id say Half mechanical half of a planet slabbed into one. Like a sybourg planet type.
However if would be cool if you actually with a group of engineers (or only for the command type stations, GA) build a station that consumes alot of resources or what not, and build it anywhere in space. Lag issue, depends on the server. Other things like defense and how much hull and armor it has would be faction based i guess, and maybe control functions for the GAs (if it would only be for the command stations build) such as moving, attacking, settings other things, ect.. i dunno...
[ There just farfetched ideas anyway =P, and should not be taken serious ]
------
Anyway, good ideas...

I like the planetry ring idea a great deal, question i have is could each fleet of a large enough size with enough resources build one. Kinda claiming a system as thier home system?
what would be the criteria for capping such a thing, or damaging it? How long would it take to build? would it have seperate resorces from the planet such as pop, food and power.
just some questions

Well building a plantry ring in lets say Sirus/Sol/CD would centerfir the idea that each of them is there factions home ssytems.
Seen as though it is seprate from, the planet (even though its oribting it) i surgest that it would have seperate pop, food and power but it can take rescources from the planet by itself (if the planet is freindly and owns a SP)
there questions awnserd =P
I'm still for the Dyson shpere though.... even we can't find a way inside lol. would be a cool thing to have.... a hiden system... no jump gates to it..... you have to find it yourself, then BLOW your way in! lol
