This might sound like a backward suggestion, kind of like admitting defeat.
I'm sure there is something in the client<->server comms that would allow the client to gadge if it's lagging and by how much, like a small time-out or a command not being echoed back quick enough. If you were to display this info as a simple 1-10 bar gauge type thingy in the corner of the screen, it would allow the player to act accordingly, maybe avoiding a planet collision or other lag induced death.

that would be nice
at the very lest you can always log and more importantly know when you have to log (due to the little lag hideing "feature" giveing you this nice smooth game that displays the environment incorrectly, ie. bombing the target planet... makeing the turn at 275gu and hit the planet even though clearly on the screen the planet is more than 200gu away and you are nolonger faceing it)
