I know this sounds cool and is most likely way too complicated to actually code but I was just pondering the idea of having Formations other than the follow formation. This Could be done using Formation Buttons.
There could be various formations such as; [Ill elaborate on these later on in the post]
Convoy
Protect [1 ship]
Guard F1 [Formation 1]
Guard F2 [Formation 2]
Guard F3 [Formation 3]
Here's how it would:
All buttons would become availabe in a group. You would have to be grouped with these ships in order for it to work.
Convoy - A group of ships click the Convoy and depending on which ships are in the group say we had 3 dreads, 2 cruisers, a destroyer, a Supply ship and a transport would depend on where each goes with the smaller ship in the middle. The formation would go as following: One Cruiser leading the group followed by a dread, the destroyer, another dread, the supply, the cruiser and the last dread to bring up the rear. All ships would go at a constant speed and depending if the group wanted to go faster or not would be up to the Forward point of the Convoy, in this instance that would be the Cruiser. Basically just a system that will equally distribute the more powerful ships among the less power and transport ships.
Protect - this will work with only one ship. When you are the ship needing special protection you finda combat class ship and send a request for him to protect you. This would give credits as the current Protect mission does but when the ship needing special Protection requests you to protect him you would go into a formation either leading or trailing this ship. You would get extra credits for actually going into this formation as most pilots in the game at current just get a mission and dont actually protect their Mission.
Guard F1 - again a group of ships is used to protect a particular ship or small group of other ships, must be transport or station class. In this formation the target ship being Guarded would Always stay in the middle. 2 more powerful ships would accompany this ship on either side followed by 2 not as powerful on either side of that.. 2 would trail out in a parallel line behind the target and again maintain a constant speed. For example lets say we had a station, 2 dreads, and 4 cruisers. the station would go in the middle as the ship being guarded. the dreads would go on either side of the station and the 2 cruisers would be on farthest side away from the station of the dreads, the other cruisers would be in the back.
Guard F2 - Same rules as Guard F1 only instead of a T formation this is a circular formation creating a perimiter that makes it hard to break through. This would be extremely hard to do without a great number of ships. Depending on the size of the Fleet wishing to guard the main ship depends on how big the circle / perimiter is.
Guard F3 - Same Rules as Guard F1 & F2 except the formation would be that of one ship in the lead, 2 on either side of the and one in back. Further ships would be spread out in a diagonal of the others.

faus said somefin about formations actually going into the game *shrugs* i suspect that is along the lines he'd have it, haveing to be in a group and all. i'd love the idea for formations in DS... hrm... too tired, not making sense.

Yeah, Formations would be Great!!!
(on a side note)-i have always wanted to chase after a an Nmy ship While Both ships were jumping. so that you could Chase down the Nmy on Long jumps. and have a battle During the Jump also.

hmm.... i see myself smashing into planets more often if this was implemented. already when i put follow ozark from junction, i shash into the planet next to it....AI gotta be improved first
