I know this isn't a tech support forum. So please don't think I'm deliberatetly spamming. I'm reinstalling Darkspace now as I write this, because I don't know where else to turn.

I am trying to upgrade windows XP to windows 8.

The installation works perfectly untill it has gotten to the point of the reboots and the windows 8 logo's that are part of the Windows 8 boot.

After around the 4th reboot, it simply says it has failed to install. It says this rather briefly, and in a old DOS based format. The it reboots XP and says it has reverted back to the previous configuration. It takes around 1 hour to get to that point, so it's rather frustrating that I haven't even got any idea's about what to do.

I am really intent on fixing my computer up to Windows 8, becuase XP is just a joke for a PC of this caliber. Plus it will help me to play games. I'll even subscribe to Darkspace if this works!

Well what kind of specs do you have that'd make XP a "joke".

XP is on the same level as Win 7.

Although i admit XP is getting on in years now.

It's a Core 2 Quad core with 4 gigs of RAM. Allthough I suppose you're right the point about XP is a matter opinion.

So, any ideas on how to fix this error?

I can't find the error log for Win 8 upgrades...

Try booting from the windows 8 dvd and not from xp and do a clean install not an upgrade.

Well i can tell you have a system that's be nice with Win 7 at least.

As i'm not upgrading i can only advise you go to the Microsoft Forums or a tech site until Jack or maybe Eledore tells you something.

To a kind of laymen like me on OS's it sounds like some part of the system can't handle it.

And like Two Face said, try a boot CD.

hmm. I actually went into the store with over £100 with me to buy a full version of Windows 8. The store clerk insisted that I buy the upgrade, and told me that the full version had been "re-called."

So here I am with this stupid upgrade version.

Mabey to get this moving a bit: Do any of you know what kind of file would contain the log for the upgrade attempt? If you do I think I can manage to paste the error code into google...

I haven't installed any windows for a while now, but if any of you have, and you remember what the error log file names are, please let me know.

Ive never needed to look at the log before so not sure if this is the right place, Run - %windir%\Windowsupdate.log

Sounds like you have the wrong drivers for the hard drive controller to me at a guess.

is the upgrade cd for upgrading win 7 to win 8 only? or it explicitly says "suitable to upgrade all windows versions" or something like that?

otherwise clean install has helped me in some occaissons

other option: when installing windows did u divide HD in paritions, and if yes, is the partition holding win xp large enough to install win 8 on?

Make sure your installing the 32 or 64 bit version for your system. I heard that when upgrading from XP, that you have to do a clean install or it will fail. Make sure to back up all your data...

Thanks for all your help, fellow Dark space fanatics. Fixed.

It turns out that it wasn't an upgrade version. It was the full version. I am talking to you now from the full on luxury of a Windows 8 system.

Yay for me!

Now if they would just make a real windows version that was not made to look like CrApple to compete with them. Guess Win7 Pro will be on my system for a few more years...

yup runs as flawlessly as it did on Windows 7. Not a bad upgrade for $40 if you ask me. But I did disable metro and re-enabled the start menu.

They made that possible?
