My laptop just got stolen so im looking to buy a new one and would like some help of people who know a little more about it then me:)
Currently I can purchase a laptop from my university; it costs 900 euro's:
Lenovo ThinkPad T530
Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bits
Intel® Core™ i7 3610 QM
2.3Ghz, FSB 1600 MHz, 6MB L3 cache
8.192 MB, 1600 MHz DDR3 (2 x 4.096 MB)
500 GB S-ATA 7.200 RPM
Nvidia Optimus Graphics NVS 5400M 1GB dedicated
15,6-inch HD+ ED-backlit WVA Anti-glare 1600 * 900
How good a deal is this? Im not an expert on processors but my old laptop had a 2.5 Ghz dual core; so im not certain how much better this is. Should I buy this or look for something in the stores?

So theres a few differences here; hard disk is twice as large but a little slower; will I notice this? The processor seems just about equal and the graphics card a lot better (right?). Also Full-HD is nice. Hope someone can help me out with this!

Differences Between the two:
Processors are about the same
Hard Drive in the Thinkpad is faster, 5400rpm drives are very slowww
GPU: GPU in the 15R is 10% faster According to notebookcheck.com
Higher res screen is always better, so 15R wins there as well. Any chance of getting a 15R without the 5400rpm drive? That's what I would go with.

You said it out yourself: you like the 2nd one with AMD card and HD display.
How about twice hardisk capacibility? Ok, this is the cloud world but if you're in a place without wifi, you will find 1TB HDD is worth using. And I believe HDD contains the most precious value in the laptop.
So stick with the 2nd laptop.

problem is 5400 rpm Hard Drives are really really slow.

Yea, this would be the smart way to go, although 5400 RPM's isn't all that bad, my HDD is 5400 RPM ^.^

5400PRM isn't bad. Just limits you a little in how much large apps you can use at the same time. And no video edditing or other heavy I/O applications.
You got 8gb of memory so if you don't open to much apps most can be stored on the Ram instead of the Swap.
About the storage space. You either have internets or you don't. and most people do not prepair to be without it these days. Or unless you love to drag around files you already used/watched before (movies/series). for a laptop it is better to just have a small (>200gb) fast low energy usage hdd then a big hunk of storage. if you want the storage space, buy a external drive. then you can attach it when YOU need it. For me this way gives me a good 10% extra battery life.
I personally use a 256gb SSD and a 2Tb Lacrie External drive.

Second, no doubt, but as everyone else has already mentioned : swap out that hard drive with a nice 1TB - the only issue is you're going to struggle to find a 7,200 RPM drive in a 2.5" format with that sort of storage space. The best alternative would be a WD 750GB Black : http://www.ebuyer.com/252715-wd-750gb-black-mobile-drive-wd7500bpkt
It also comes in a 500GB flavour should you want to cut down the price a bit.

Just to clarify a little; I always have wifi connection available pretty much wherever I am. I also have a 3TB external HD to use; and my old laptop had a drive of 250GB (admittedly, that was a little bit annoying)

Then clearly you should have 1080p display with only 850 euro, instead of 1080i with 900 euro.
5400rpm is not slow because you have 8GB DDR3 1600MHZ. And with 1TB, you can leave the 3TB external drive at home. You use laptop, you want mobility. I myself don't see a reason to bring an external HDD - heavier, more space, more cable. As you're surround by wifi all the time, I guess electrical power is not your concern as well.
As mention, you want mobility so weight and temperature are worth comparing. Which is lighter? Which produces less heat? Thinkpad is a famous brand of durability, indeed. I don't use Dell so I don't have any experience with it.
The customer service is also important. When my laptop needs repaired, I do want the warranty provider to be close to my home. Customer service is something you need to take cautious.

Im not dragging my external HD with me; 500GB is enough to carry the stuff I want. Service on the lenovo is excellent; it is provided by my university and they have a 1-hour service on it for 3 years; meaning if it breaks they will try to repair it at the university or I get a new one in 1 hour. So that is pretty nice..
Also: I dont really have the money to buy a new harddrive with it. Furthermore delivery time for the Lenovo is 20 work days; Dell delivers in 2 days.

Also i bought my laptop 2 years ago and it has comparable statistics with the 2 laptops u noted, only mine was 600 euro...so i think those 2 laptops are rip offs pricewise..
try Acer or Asus, they seem to have good laptops for money, samsung is 2x the price for same statistics laptop just skip that brand.
try internet stores, and pay the 50 euro extra for the 3 year warranty.
the thinkpad has some good stuff, just the 1 GB dedicated will be noticable if u play games made in last 3 years. i found a toshiba with 2GB dedicated with 256GB solid state HDD, just that they dont seem to have option to add normal HD for the 1 TB of storage u might wanna waste. personally i got all i need from about 200 GB.

Dell uses components that are not made to work together, to save on cost. They write their own drivers to make them work. The also have a bad name due to using sub par capasitors on main boards. Several issues have arose in the past due to these standards they create. Be cautious when buying a Dell... Lenovo bought IBM's Think Pad division. Im sure they are built good. They are more of a business computer.
