"Several online news sites, including the Huffington Post, have reported that the star Betelgeuse will undergo a supernova explosion next year — yes, that's 2012 — and shine as brightly in the sky as a second sun."-SPACE.com

What do you guys think?

Second sun? Binary star for a few weeks?

I heard the range is somewhere between 1 and 100,000 years from now... so the chances of any of being alive to see it, doubtful

I would love to be able to see it but your right, it might not happen in our lifetime.

If we see it during 2012 then it actually happened quite some time ago.

Its not possible to predict the exact time a star will turn into a nova or supernova. Astronomers only know that Betelgeuse is in the last stage of a star's lifespan. Also, at about 650 lightyears away, it will be about as bright as the crescent moon.

If we see it next year, it probably happened about 650 years ago. LOL.

Being able to see a second star during the day, the one thing that really puts in perspective how the universe is so upredictable and huge.

Just because it bears repeating in case anyone has actually latched onto the idea: The whole "2012" thing is just the end of several cycles plotted on the calendar. The belief was that every five thousand years, something cleaned out the world and a new era started up. You'll notice, looking back in 5000 year increments, the natural forces of the universe did not conspire to smack humanity off the face of existance.

Mayan to modern calendar conversions may be up to 50 years off I believe. Thus true fanatics would have to wait to 2062 to find out.
