This is a mod based on Freespace 2 although it's actually a standalone game in its own right.

It pits you in the cockpit of a Viper or a Raider. Because of the game it's based on, it plays a lot like other sci-fi flight sims (like the X-wing series), but there are also a few moves you can do like gliding and lateral/vertical movement.

I've just downloaded the demo for it (it's still in development) and so far it looks very very promising. The demo's about a 350Mb download.

Sorry if that sounded like a press release

You can get FS2 for free. And you don't need FS2 to play it; standalone. See me or Tbone for details (you saved those links, right, Tbone?). Great stuff, all around. Waiting for the Homeworld Mod (has some awesome models).

I would also add that this means legally free. The game developers or publishers or whomever released the entire game (code and all) as open source.

But yes, I have those links for both Beyond the Red Line and FreeSpace 2 Open (the open source version, with player made improvements... actual improvements).

And has been said, you do not need FreeSpace 2 to run the BTRL demo, or the game itself when it is finally released

(Only reason I beat Scar is because he bumped himself off an asteroid... 4 times).

Well, the total legality is still up for debate. While the original EULA stated that you were entitled to make copies of the game to distribute to friends without a profit, some people still insist that the internet does not fall under this clause. It's not an issue, though, because the only entity with the rights to sue anyone making copies is, at last checking, a few million dollars in debt. And they haven't objected yet.

Some other standalone games that spring from the FS2 Open/SCP project:
Starfox: Lylat Wars (looking very sweet from the screenshots)
Babylon 5 (finished, AFAIK, but also nonfunctional with the latest versions of the SCP)
Wing Commander Saga (Prologue and a few other teasers released)
Homeworld (Very good looking and promising, players will fly fighters, potentially corvettes, and there's a possibility of frigate control).

In addition, there are many user-created campaigns that work with FS2 itself; at least three of this are high quality, and are as long as if not longer than the original campaign. You can even get a recreation of the Freespace 1 campaign.

It's abandone-ware - you can download it and share it for free, regardless of what the EULA says anymore.

This was in PCGamer UK about two months ago, so it can't be bad... I only worry about there being an official BSG game, which would end up with the mod being deleted due to copywrite issues.
