Give you good odds that it's an ARG (Alternate Reality Game).

Lots of companies do this kind of thing to promote their products nowadays (including Bungie with Halo 2).

My thoughts exactly.

Bungie have done this before with their BeeHive website.

The countdown timer is skipping a lot of numbers. 7-9 in the units, 7-9 in the tens, 2-9 in the hundreds, etc etc...

It's most likely a part of the Halo-3-Advertising. As Drafell already mentioned, the timer does skip a lot of numbers... I think after it ran out, we'll get the next part of the campaign.

If anyone is interested in it: the counter does skip every number with a digit greater than 6. The countdown for the last two counters starts at 113 and ends at 000, thus forming eight groups of seven numbers (equaling 56 different numbers) and a single group of four numbers, totalling in 60 different numbers... one minute equals to 60 seconds, one hour to 60 minutes.

Common sense tells us that the last counter advances at one number per second.

The countdown is at 005:010:040:000 right now. Between 5 and 0, no number will be skipped. Between 10 and 0, four numbers will be skipped, six numbers remain. Between 40 and 0, 16 numbers will be skipped, 24 numbers remain.

The counter will run out in 5 days, 6 hours, 24 minutes - that equals to next Wednesday, 20:54 UTC.

@Draf

Bungie is a subsidiary of MS, so it doesn't surprise me that it leads to their network.

I think the timer's relating to either an ARG. They've done this before, like I said with BeeHive, and it caused an avolanch of ARG-like games.

If you want to take part you should be able to do a bit of digging.

ARG are NOT for the weak minded, you need a lot of know how on real world things, as well as computers (some info is hidden on the source code on some pages).

look closer at the number bases. its in base 7 and starts at 113 each time it reaches 000 per group, thus making 59 decimal per group, and since it counts in seconds, the first 113 by each second on a base of 7 is = to 0-59 seconds, or 60 seconds. Which means the next colum is minutes in 60, and the next is hours, ect.. However weather or not the hours is max'd at 113 or not is the question as there are 24 hours in a day. So its colum could be max'd at 32. If this is the case, then it is this up comming wed in 5 days. If not and all colums are max'd at 113, then it would be 59 hours max on its group, which means each day number = about 2.5 days, which means about 12 to 13 days untill the counter reaches 0. Which is june 27 or 28 ish. And omg my birthday is on june27 O.o...
