Those of you who have never run a website before can skip this thread!
I'm currently in the process of trying to move DSCW over to another host, but the idea of moving 78MB of data from one directory all in tiny files isn't exactly fun or quick over FTP.
I know using CPanel I can unzip files that I've uploaded, but what I want to know, is if there's any available script that I can run, that'll g/zip a directory.
If anyone knows of such a script, I'd be very grateful if you bought it to my attention.
Again I need to g/zip a directory ON the server, not g/zip a file on my own computer.
- Jack

Jack you may want to try a FTP client which supports Direct FTP to FTP transfers.
Then you can just go from the old host to the new host without downloading to your own computer.

AceFTP - FTP to FTP transfers. Don't know if it uses your home computer as a go-between.
I'm gonna PM you about this Jack, prolly already have it solved.

what, you can ctrl+a on your FTP client and download it to a temporary space on your 5 TB ueber hard disk and then re-upload it to your new FTP server using the same client with your ueber upload rate?
to answer your question: not unless you're running a unix command prompt, I would surmise.

If you had read the post:
FTP'ing a lot of files, no matter the size, is a pain in the rear end. On average, to show the age of the FTP protocol, transfering 100000x 1 byte files, takes longer to transfer than a 1mb file using FTP, it probably even takes longer than 10mb.
There are a lot of files on the /ds/ directory of ravenwarriors.com. The size, I'm not so bothered about, it's just the sheer volume of seperate files I do not look forward to copying.
I love, and use SmartFTP, but it doesn't support site-site transfer, I'll try AceFTP and see if it works though, thanks for the davice.
Oh, and you can only run command line on *nix systems if you own the actual server, or have root access, which most website hosts do not allow.
