sorry about the title of this thread,
Just wondering if anyone in the DS community does Bonsai
those are the little japanese trees (think Karate Kid)
I have done Bonsai for about 12 years, and am still learning
(FYI I am 27) I got interested in it when I was very young and as it was a very cheap hobby (15 year olds dont have alot of money) it suited me
this thread is to find others that Bonsai, or might be interested in it

Is it really a cheap hobby? Cause they cost a lot of $$$ to buy from the shop when they are finished.
I think i have ta;lked to you before about it, but I wouldn't mind getting into it. When i spent some time behind bars a while ago there was a few people that were getting kits to do it with. I am not sure what they wre costing them to buy but I know the kit had just abou everything a new starter needed to get going, except for the experience of course and the very in depth instructions helped to bridge that gap.

well, as for the price, Price is nothing, as a Bonsai is just a tree that has been dwarfed
Dwarfing a Tree means doing horriable things to it
U dont have to buy one, u can make one, this is cheap, I have several Bonsai that I have started from seedlings from local tree's
I have even heard of roofers that "Bonsai" sprouting tree's they found in a clients Gutter (they tranferred them to a pot later)
some of the most beautiful Bonsai are from tree's u probably saw today
for example Trident maple, bald cypress
what u need is a young tree
and a planting tray
it is best to start with a seedling, make sure the planting tray isnt deeper than 2 inches, this keeps it from sending down any deep roots, this saves trouble in the future
THIS takes alot of time
basicaly what I do it trim any growth that is going UP, like when tobacco is "topped" it forces the plant to grow out instead of UP,
the total cost for a beginning is 20 bucks, most of that is the seedling
(check ebay for seedlings, some even mention Bonsai in auction)
obviously if u use a Local seedling its cheaper
as for Pot, and soil, I pick up pots at yardsales , I just pick a dish I like, and drill holes in it for drainage and add screens, if u want to buy soil, its up to you, what i do is a high drainage mix, potting soil, sand, and clay. mix is up to you, but Fungus is your enemy so high drainage is a MUST
Bonsai should be Kept OUTSIDE AT ALL TIMES
unless u have a party and u want it for display(3 days max)
in the movies, they have them inside, ..fiction, its a Movie...
they need the sun, and u have to water them almost everyday as they have a shallow pot (if you are willing to wire a section of living room with grow lights, u can keep them in longer, as I have, (but to be honest, I use my grow lights for my pitcher plants, and flytraps mostly)
pruning depends on species, certain "classic" Bonsai in the Juniper family only need to be pruned once, maybe twice a year, it depends on growth and what u are trying to do with the plant
if u check online u will find alot of info about all this
but keep in mind that Bonsai is an Art, and u get to decide
My goal is almost always to make a mini version of the Mature tree, but some like classic styles, Like "Brush" and so Forth
most wire the tree to the tray(thru the drainage holes in pot, and use braces to force tree to grow in certain directions) this is up to you
expect to Lose plants, as mentioned before, U are doing horriable things to this tree, everything u are doing is Contra to the plants survial, some will die
this is basic
anyone that Bonsai please add, as I said I am still learning

please everyone, Google Bonsai Images
ohhh Codex, I have sold some of my Bonsai for a great deal of money
but most I have ever invested in one is 40 bucks, and 30 bucks of that was the silly Pot that people seem to like lol

I didn't think it'd be but that was genuinely interesting
Unfortunately, with a community as small as this, you'll be lucky to find another person who shares your hobby. But, if I ever decide to construct an arboretum for gnomes, I'll be sure to ask you first.

Apparently they start getting "expensive" at about 50 years+ of age, and you can make your own bonsai within 8-10 years or less.. (buy "finished product" for maybe 80 EUR)
Starter kit is maybe a good christmas present, for someone who has an "outsides".

I have a small Water oak sappling in my yard that I run over with the lawn mower every other week....Does that count? it's been about 2-6" tall for about 6 years now.
