The world would be a better place with programmers, so here is a link to download FREE Visual Studio IDEs.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/

I'll give you a quick rundown of the packages.

Visual Basic - good for casual programming

Visual J# - I have no idea who would use this, but it is there if you want it.

Visual C++ - The ultimate power, but it could be confusing for a newbie

Visual Web Developer - use this if you want to make ASP.NET applications(web applications)

Visual C# - My personal favorite, the future of programming. I would recommend you download this. It also has some nice tutorials.

You should be able to find a home in one of these languages if you are interested in programming. You get the most powerful IDEs ever for FREE!!!! Download now.

Since C++ is what we're using, I'll learn it..

The C# syntax is very similar to Java. Plus it has the backing of the Almighty Microsoft. You may think they don't do well on their other products, but their programming products are top-notch. I'm glad to hear you guys are working on learning programming.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/learning/ Visual Basic Tutorials

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vwd/learning/ Web Developer Tutorials(ASP.NET) you can run the applications locally, but if you want to put them on a web server, you'll need a Windows server.

http://www.geocities.com/sstutor/contents.htm C++ Tutorials/Reference

http://www.csharp-station.com/Tutorial.aspx
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/visualCSharp/learning/ C# Tutorials The second link is highly recommended for C# tutorials.

Remember, go with C# if you are unsure about the language you want to learn.

Visual Basic is a great starter program, very easy to use and make simple programs...

Java and C++ are at most, object orientated and can be tweaked for whatever your neads (most games created nowerdays are written in C++ with some other bits of Python and what not (lua aswell)). If I were to suggest starting... Start with Visual Basic (get some online tutorials), and then get onto Java, which has a rather large starting curve. Once that's all done, start having a go at Visual C++, but I warn you, it's not for the light hearted, it's very, very different to Visual Basic.

Also, try learning some ASM, since you might want to talk directly to the hardware and not let windows do it for you (ASM = Assembler). Word of warning though... ASM is NOT easy.

But it's a helluva hard program to use...

In uni, we've had 2 lessons on it, and they're telling us to write a file transfer program :/... With encryption support... 100% in assembler... In 15 days...

HAHAHAHAHA

I'm so gonna fail.

If you guys don't want to download the IDEs, then at least get the .NET framework runtimes. You need these to run applications created for .NET. Here are the links.

http://www.antdizzle.com/dotnetfx_1.1.exe - .NET framework 1.1

http://www.antdizzle.com/dotnet_1.1SP1.exe - .NET framework 1.1 SP 1

http://www.antdizzle.com/dotnetfx_2.0.exe - .NET framework 2.0

I suggest you download all three in the order I gave you. THey shouldn't mess up your computer, that is if you didn't already mess up your computer. So help support the .NET programmers by downloading them.

ASM...*shudders*

That can make young children cry, with is omnipresent "mov eax,ah", just teasing you, making you think it means something, but you can't figure something out just by looking at it.

I actually hear that its only x86 ASM that's a bitch. PPC ASM is apparently easier...

But whatever, those low-level programming languages are for purists and masochists. Good ol' C++ for me...

...and VB if I need to finish something fast (or...involving the Windows API)...

But yes, more programmers == good.

I make half finished games like DS Galaxy...

Strangely reminiscent of another game that we all play....
