Tonight, at 10 P.M local time (-6h GMT) the planet Mars will rise in the East, and be the largest it has ever been in the past 65,000 years. It will reach its azimuth at 3 A.M, and should be roughly the size of the moon. Bit late notice, but if you haven't heard about it....there it is.

I hate to tell ya,.. but thats a Hoax.
If Mars were to be the Size of the Moon/luna we would be in Serious trouble.
This Emall you probably got Is a Hoax, and its been going arround to alot of people. I heard about it from my Astronomy Professor.

I saw the Moon at about 3-4 times its normal size one time. Thou it was just the bending of light as it rose over the hurizon that made it look that way.

I think horrific tides would be cool though. Some costal cities need to get wiped out.

Anyone studying astronomy would immediately find this a hoax... I knew it was by the time I saw "as big as the moon" bit... And the tides would be hazardous if Mars even did come close, and millions of lives will be lost because of it.
Mars and Earth can't get any closer than what two years ago.. (was 59 km back then) and now (after reading that NASA entry) will be 69 km. Not only would it pull Earth out of orbit but, the Moon would hit Mars in no time I bet and because of the two gravities of the planets, would probably collide into each other, meaning, no more Earth, Moon, or Mars to explore..
So, keep in mind, Mars and Earth can't come this close even if people wished it. It's just purely impossible right now.

Well what do you know..... i thought Mars was already the 4th 'shiniest' object in the sky.
And yes, its a hoax. As far as i know Mars is only a slight bit bigger then Luna so for Mars to be as big as Luna it would have to be in orbit around Earth..... can you see where im going here?

If you had thought a bit about it, then you might have noticed, that a planet cant approach that fast within a day....hardly being seen one day and being as lange as the full moon the other day
And....the email probably refers to 2 years ago when the mars was quite near (you were able to recognize it as a planet with your bare eyes)

Well I had to reply for the sake of science .
The Moon is the same size regardless where it is in the night sky. It doesn't change size if its near the horizon (no bending of light). It just looks that way do to reference points along the horizon making it look bigger.
There I feel better. There is a reason why studies are done and researched, because in a case like this the eye can perceive the wrong thing.
Raise your arm and put your thumb up to the moon at the horizon and then do the same when its high in the sky, its the same size.
There are quit a few tricks that the eyes can be susceptible to:
You have a blind spot in part of your vision.
In low light of hypoxic (lack of oxygen) conditions you can't see color (just shades of gray).
If you look at a lone light source long enough it will move, or look like it will move.
Quite some interesting phenomenon and reasons for why they occur if you research it.

The mass of mars is around 10.7% the mass of Earth.
The mass of the moon is around 11% the mass of Mars.
