Not a bad idea. had one myself way way back.
But unfortunately the quality of these banners is to low. (not even mentioning the artistic value)
A vinyl banner usually is 80x200 or 100x200 (metric centimeters). This requirement alone has forced me to give up as i can't make anything that large that will look good on those sizes. at 1400dpi or less the entire banner just looks like it is made of pixels.
Try, Try, and try until you give up.

If we're talking about forum/internet banners, they don't have to be very large. I'm sure the banners on the homepage suffice already.
Also, free advertising is great! Try and spread this game around to people you know or forums you visit (but no spamming)

Just had a thought. You could advertise this game for virtualy free by giving people a modest amount of credits for having pictures or signatures on social networking sites and or forums that promote darkspace. Get someone to create a set of approved Darkspace promotional pictures that people can take with them through their internet travels.
Make a sticky thread where people can post screenshots of where they have brought their banners and then reward them accordingly.
If you really want to encourage people to spread the word you could make it into a recuring contest to see who can bring darkspace to the most different websites and give a bonus to the winner. Just a suggestion.

Like adding a "Referred by" box to the sign up form? That'd be the only way I can think of to reliably track the number of people a single person gets to join.
Is a great idea though, everybody wins.
