Regarding teamwork and navigation, sometimes saying meet me at the supply, sensor, recon or whichever plat or "target this weapons plat" often leaves many scratchin their heads thinking which one exactly you mean. There often follows lengthy textual clarification and poor description which could all easily be avoided and make for a smoother and in all probability more enjoyable game experience if platforms, like ai (of which they are a type of) could have a unique identification such as Defence Platform Alpha or Sensor Platform III and so on.
This one small change would help so much in making teamwork more fluid and better. Sure there are workarounds like naming them yourself but due to an inability to tag them yourself with some sort of 'faction label' not everyone is down with the system that any fleet may or may not use.
If Developers were to be really kind perhaps players would even be able to name them themselves with a '/nameplatform' type command. Hey you could even make it so that only subscribers or the actual engineers who made them were able to name them to further encourage subscription and support the game. People are a funny nostalgic bunch and the ability to personalise stuff makes so much difference and creates much emotional attachment. I understand there may be a potential for 'abuse' were certain people may want to use naughty words but surely a profanity filter could be implemented to deny the application of the most offensive of words, or even limit the characters that could be used to just two digits so a numerical system could be used.
Any thoughts?

Or perhaps assign a number to the platform, whether in order of construction (ie 1...2...3...etc) or if other plats of the type being built already exist in system, continue the numbering where the pre-existing ones left off.
Could be handy but would only be really relavent to ones own faction plats. To the enemy they remain simply red targets that need to be exterminated.

Or we can adopt a system that is used in planetside quite a bit. Where leaders of squads and leaders of platoons can set various waypoints for each team to complete.
Maybe we can do something similar for things for fleets and groups. So we can have waypoints and objectives specific to fleets and groups for things like this, such as this group capture this planet while this group attacks these plats and this fleet create a perimeter and stop people from attacking the command [ship] orbiting the planet waiting to rebuild it.

Other than the ideas outlined in the first post we could have faction specific classification names where each type of platform in order of construction gets its designated term.
Eg:
UGTO could use the NATO phonetic alphabet (aka International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet).
Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta through to Zulu. (26 letters) plus last 4 possible platform names would be a number added to Zulu such as Zulu 1 - Zulu 4
ICC could use the Greek alphabet, as used in star classification.
Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta through to Omega (24 letters)plus last 6 possible platform names would be a number added to Omega such as Omega 1 - Omega 6.
K'luth could use the Roman Numeral system
I, II, III, IV through to XXX.
Each platform of each type would have it's own designation so the first supply UGTO supply platform would be designated Alfa, the second Bravo and so on. The first Defense platform however would also be termed Alfa, the second Bravo and so on. Again any other platform type would restart the sequence and so that each platform would then have a unique name by type and designation code.
The idea of allowing players to use a command similar to '/nameship' like '/nameplat' would enable renaming of bases on the fly as well as being able to designate codenames of various groups of platforms. So a group of various platforms out in space could be called by the constructing engineer
examples
Deep Space 3 Supply platform Alpha
Deep Space 3 Sensor platform Beta
Deep Space 3 Gun platform 'Defendor' and so on
Outer Rim 1 Recon Platform Gamma
Transfer Gate Observation Post Lima
Necroph FOB Sensor Point Tango
Necroph FOB Supply Point Uniform
even less seriously if people want to call them Sensor Platform Steve, Barry or Nigel that's fine too, it's all about creating a sense of personality right?
These platforms could then be renamed by other players every so often or if names needed to be changed for a certain operation.
Sound good?

So you say but do all other faction players agree?
You as a K'Luth wouldn't really see them since they would be enemy platform names which would be mostly out of your sight. If you do see them and the 'clutter' bothers you feel free to jump in and 'tidy-up' by eradicating it from the battlespace. K'luth would have short concise Roman numerals for their platforms and if you don't like 'clutter' you are always free to remove ship icons, planet icons, orbit paths, orders paths, contacts and 'grid' overlay to to really free up your Nav screen. : P
Happy Hunting.

I like that naming convention, wouldn't really add clutter at all, honestly...
Something similar for the fighters would be nice because those numerics are getting absolutely out of hand. MMMMMMMMMMMXIVI? How much higher is it gonna get?

i would prefer that all platforms use their name suffixed with roman numerals, as unlike fighters, platforms are much more durable and limited to 30 per server.
if verbal names are needed, i'd suggest Watchtower, Nightguard, Smasher, Blaster, Protector...
