I was out on the edge of the system, no enemies in sight, no nearby planets.
I finally charged up my jump drive and went to return to a station (Checked navigation, no obstructions in the way of my path)
About 5 seconds into jumping, the ship spontaneously explodes out of nowhere, and I get the message "Fluttershy was destroyed by ?!"
No player or planet name, just "?!"

That's the thing, there was nothing on navigation, I made sure to check, coast was completely clear.
Alright, so that makes 3 deaths.
1st was getting killed by an elite that didn't even hit me.
2nd was an invisible asteroid field right the ^@#& out of nowhere
3rd was getting ambushed by a kluth destroyer while under an interdictor while having half a dozen allies around who didn't seem inclined to get them off of my ass. (even though I was supplying them and 50gu trying to hide behind them)

This happens when you get killed by a weapon that belonged to a object/ship that has been destroyed or no longer exists..
The server has to declare something or crash, so it declares '?' ..

Getting killed by things you can't see is really really depressing.
I don't mean k'luth, because they at least need to uncloak before they shoot you.
I just mean spontaneous combustion that, as far as I know, is due to my engineer jerking off behind the console while the reactor goes critical.

The thing is astriods are very difficult to see during long jumps, since they are no stationary they have no fixed position and when jumping if you see them in your way mid jump your dead. Best to stay out of known astroid populatated areas. (They have low signiture so they aren't lighting up the sky showing there position.) I build weapon platforms, and when some of those platforms destroyed an enemy, it said ?! had killed them.
The more AI is around, the harder it is for the server to keep their orders fresh. So if you were surrounded by AI, it takes a while for them to refresh their orders. One way to prevent that, is to set the AI to defend you, they will react quicker when you are attacked, but it can still take a while.
I haven't seen any astroids yet, but what I hear, is that they are nearly invisible and only when you are almost on top of them do you see them. So checking your flight beforehand doesn't work. Just pray you don't jump into one.
Also, jumping when you are very damaged seems to damage your systems, if enough systems are damaged, you explode. So overloading your own systems this way will cause a Self destruct, causing the server to say 'killed by ?!'
yours sincerely,
Demigan.

Everything except for this is true, systems damage from jumping was removed. Ask an old-timer if you wish to have someone elaborate on the subject.

What has been removed, the being destroyed part when you have too many systems broken, or the fact that you damage your systems when jumping and you are damaged?
I've jumped once when I was around 10 to 15% hull (after a narrow escape from someone, so I wasn't shot at or seen right then), just before I jumped my systems randomly shut down and were repaired, but only one or two at a time. The moment I jumped, nearly 7 or 8 systems became damaged, I wasn't destroyed, but they WERE damaged.
I have been destroyed a few times when loads of systems were damaged, but I was never certain if it was systems damage or firepower that did it in the end.
So yes, I would love to have an old-timer explain to me how and what.
Yours sincerely,
Demigan.

i jumped several times at 0-4% hull, never exploded. also ai jumps at low hull sizes, they dont die.
Yes it used to be the case that jumping with 5% hull ur killed by ?! but that was....long time ago think it got re-implemented once then removed again.
in any case, atm there is no hull damage for jumping.
im not an old-timer though....

So why doesn't navigation show the general area where asteroids are?
There was no warning, there was no time to react, there was no indication that such a thing even exists.
Great idea having a feature that causes inexplicable deaths
