Since a lot of player events are coming up recently and they often reference the various NPC factions, I thought I'd give a quick primer on each of them. Note that this is out of game character, for reasons you'll soon notice.

MI: The MIR are not officially acknowledged by the human governments, and are only referenced in myth and fear by the K'Luth - rather like a "he who must not be named" type thing, if you've seen/read Harry Potter. If you've seen Star Trek, they're very like the Borg: a single hive mind, though they focus on wiping out the scourge of sentience in the universe, not assimilating it - and they have no biological components. They focus on chasing down the space-faring species they encounter, destroying them, and then harvesting their planets for resources and domination.
They do not cooperate with biologicals, they do not ally with them, they do not even communicate with them except maybe for requesting they kill themselves for the sake of efficiency. But as far as officialdom goes, they don't exist - neither human government will even mention their existence, and the K'Luth do not talk of them except in whispers, and not to the humans anyway.

Pirates: The Pirates are greedy and self-interested to the extreme. They are humans who are generally outlaws or out for a quick buck outside the system; they tend to hide in underpopulated systems and prey upon the weak. They'll ally with someone when they have a clear profit and an obvious exit path - but they don't take sides in general. And even if they are allied with someone for a time, they've no problem stabbing them in the back if there's profit in it. They tend not to ally with the K'Luth, though, just because of general human xenophobia, though they're no less greedy if the K'Luth have something good to offer.

Space Monsters: They're not really intelligent enough to matter, so they can't exactly ally. They are attracted to large gatherings, though, for the energy output that's detectable from afar.. so they sometimes show up at battles and events, but their effects are always unpredictable...

Anyway, there you have it. If you want to include NPC involvement in an event (namely as an explanation for something, as we can't guarantee that any will show up to your event), try to keep it vaguely within the bounds of these guidelines. The MIR are especially important, as they don't allow for much in terms of events - at most some relic of them, sign, or other such item... but don't necessarily expect much, since they're not acknowledged in canon yet and tend to focus predominantly on K'Luth anyway.

if you need to reference a faction, just use the right pointer.

Renegades = Military Pirates. More or less same attitude as Pirates but with bigger butt kicking ships.

Another few notes to make...

The Mir are not known by the K'luth to utilize many if any "small" ships such as scouts, frigates, destroyers... Nor have any station class ships ever been located, at least not by any K'luth units able to report back to their bretheren. K'Luth weapons seem to inflict minimal damage to Mir ships while Mir ships tear through K'Luth organic armor... Worst of all K'Luth cloaking technology appeared to cease being effective against the Mir after the loss of several of their prime planets... These events lead up to the "Exodus" and the reason the K'Luth now infringe on human space. The K'Luth believed themselves rid of the Mir since arriving in this part of the galaxy.

Pirates usually only have small, quick, nimble, and stealthy ships... They spend much of their time going after smaller outposts, transports, and cruise liners... With the three faction war in full swing space tourism has slowed forcing the Pirates to be more bold and expend more resources attacking military and planetary supply lines. They'll usually gang up on a target if they believe they can safely reap a profit. While most of their ships are relics, older and out of date, converted from other ships, etc, they are known to have well fortified Outposts or Stations to the layman. They don't waste time or care for building planets, but raids are right up their alley.

When either faction are made playable there were already balancing plans made for them...
