Part 15: Jokers
The UGTO military didn't have transports in continuous service. When they had need for one, they hired one. A transport captain only had 2 possible missions: transporting troops deep into hostile territory, or evacuating planets. With the forst option seemin absurd at the moment, Maydon shook his head at the thought of giving up.
"The transport captains are on their way sir," lieutenant Zakharov announced. "Very well, let them in as soon as they arrive," Maydon replied. "I wonder what these jokers have to tell us," mumbled vice admiral Constello. Most officers thought of them as scum, due to their reluctance to join the military. Maydon however, smiled. None of the senior staff knew that he had once, long ago, been one of these "jokers" as well.
A knock was heard, and the door opened before any response was heard. "How dare you -" started rear admiral Viermal, but he was interrupted by Maydon. "Gentlemen, if you please," he said to the transport captains, motioning to the empty chairs. "No thank," replied one of them with a thick accent, "We jus 'ere to 'and ye lads this." He handed Maydon a datapad, and turned around. "We bin paid. Unloadin shoubbe don ba now. Latah lads."
Maydon read the datapad, still smiling about the astonished senior staff. His smile grew bigger, and finally, he tossed the datapad on the table. "Read it and get to work gentlemen."

"Technically, it's possible to instal these weapons. Their mounts are very similar to our light Chem Lasers," explained Lazslo Tratzke, the Superior's chief engineer, "but they have a very different effect, which resembles our EMP cannons."
"So basically, we are to cripple them first, before we finish them off?" asked Constello. "Indeed, High Command claims these so-called 'Flux Cannons' can individually have the effect of a dozen EMP Cannons, without their inaccuracy. Their only drawback is the effective range, which is about the same as our heaviest chems," replied Maydon. "How soon can we get them installed?" he asked Tratzke.
"Well sir, we don't have to completely replace our current facilities for firing lasers. They were designed to fit on a chem turret. No new targetting software, no additional wiring, just attach the new barrel and replace the generator with a more powerfull one."
Maydon nodded, whilst looking at the detailed schematics. "Any downsides?" he inquired. "None worthy of mention. Slightly longer reload times, to avoid overheating, but in case of emergency that can be ignored. Higher energy use is compensated for the most part by the newer generators we received. And on the plus side, the damage stays the same no matter at what range they hit, unlike our chems."
"Very well. Have all our ships replace their light lasers with these weapons. Will we have sufficient replacements?" inquired Maydon. "No sir, we're about 30 short," the engineer replied, "But I've studied the schematics and I don't think the factories on Ocotat will have trouble reproducing these."
"Get to it," Maydon said. We may have a chance after all, he thought as he left the room.
