Is there any way to increase the draw distance? At a certain camera zoom level it looks like all ships including stations stop being drawn except for the rings.

No, there's no way. It's all to do with poly and triangle limits.

Many games use several models for the same object, but at different levels of detail.
At a certain distance, the model downgrades.
When fully zoomed out, a destroyer, for example, could be nothing but a 6 faced model.
I do not know how the game is structured, but I'm certain it would be tedious, low priority, and just really not worth the time to make 3 levels of detail for each model (though there are scripts in modeling software that lets you reduce polygons.)
If anything though, I would ask that when the ships fade out, we get the ship icon to replace it, this way we know which way we're facing. [ This Message was edited by: PsyCrow on 2013-05-07 21:47 ]

I agree with the above idea. Some way of knowing which way we are facing when in 'Tactical' view on full zoom out would be incredibly useful.
It is essential to be spatially aware, presumably that is the whole purpose of 'Tactical' view in the first place. I find myself constantly zooming in and out in this view in order to keep tabs on where my nose is relative to my surroundings.
