Does anyone know how much prestige you lose from 1 resource lost in the resources lost stat?

It's -.005 prestige lost per resource lost

I made a REALLY crappy prestige loss calculator... please tell me if it's giving the correct results

Press enter and input the questions. Rank is a number (admiral is 10, I think) and resource cost is that number shown when purchasing a ship.

The amount of prestige that you will lose will be shown on the last line.

prestige loss calculator: http://www.mediafire.com/?we88rvk8zwswkqm
(Why did it compile to nearly 4MB in size? good lord...)

You can reference the ranks here, with Midshipman being 0
http://www.darkspace.net/wiki/index.php/Rank

Is this the correct formula?
0.005 * ((var_rank * 0.04) * var_resources)

No. it's resources * -.005. That's it. You're thinking of when stuff is added to resources lost, it's ((rank * .04) * buildcost)

also, backy made a prestige calculator ages ago that still should work fine

I thought rank acted as a modifier on prestige loss?

/facepalm

when your ship dies, the formula that calculated how many resources is added to your resources loss is:

(rank * .04) * buildcost (if non-gate spawnable)

when the game calculates prestige, the formula is:

prestige = (resources lost * -.005)

you see?

Relax relax... I see what's going on now, it just seemed odd that a higher rank results in more resources being lost

Why is it odd? You're a more important person, you shouldn't be dieing, the punishment is heavier.

Think of prestige as being rewarded by your faction. If you screw up, you lose it, if you've got a higher rank, screwups are more costly, and you are more experienced and it should not be happening.

I understood the higher penalty, what I did not understand is why more resources would be lost.

The prestige penalty is directly related to resources lost, so I understand now. Like, in my case, I guess I've lost 1440 prestige from various deaths.
(yet people still think I'm QQing about pres loss because I suck)

That works:

Resources lost: (10 * .04) * 150000 (aprox. buildcost for a dreadnought) = 60000

Prestige lost: 60000 * -0.005 = -300 (the approx loss for a dreadnought).

But Admiral is 10 or 11?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, I've just checked manual, Admiral is 11 so:

Resources lost: (11* .04) * 150000 = 66000

Prestige lost: 66000 * -0.005 = -330

Which makes sense.

Rank changes the amount of resources lost because if you changed the amount of prestige you lost per point of resources lost based on your rank, every time you got promoted you would suddenly lose prestige.

Example: I am rank 1, I lose 1 prestige per resources lost, I have 100 resources lost so I lose 100 prestige from my total. I get promoted to rank 2, I now lose 2 prestige per res lost, I lose 200 prestige. Because my prestige went down, I am demoted. But now my prestige goes up because I am rank one again and I get promoted. But now I lose 200 prestige and get demoted again and so on and so forth.

The way it's done currently isn't entirely intuitive, since resources lost does not equal the actual resource cost of the ship necessarily, but it's necessary because we can't have the prestige value of a statistic change. Your prestige is a derived value, you see.
