since i cant seem to find anything regarding troubleshooting on the forums (search bar?) i need some kind of guidance as far as configuring my antivirus (i use Norton ) to allow DS to run. i played fine yesterday and started the game fine the day before that, but now it simply says "failed to connect to server, check your firewall and internet settings" any pointers?

The game has not got a extended error message system. the 'check your firewall' basically tells you that the client can't connect to the server. but these can be various reasons.

First, using the 'logout' button on the webpage voids your server session for both the website AND the game servers. if you used this. Close GCQL and start it up again to fix this issue.
BUT even if you haven't used the logout button Try to close GCQL and start it again. It might just solve the issue!

DarkSpace requires Administrator access, please be sure to have GameCQ run as Administrator.
Just saying as the self updater requires full and unrestricted read/write access to the game files.

Incase that you should and absolutely 'need' the game network ports.
the port ranges in usage are from 9000 till 9111. but if you can connect to GameCQ and you have played the game before, it is unlikely that you will have to customize your firewall/router/A-V to allow those ports. U-PNP should be sufficient (the default way, aka do nothing)

Just to ask, what 'did' helped fix your issue.
So we can have a little feedback on what to put our focus on fixing, 'annoying issues'.

5 credits on closing and re-opening GameCQ
