I haven't played DS for a while so I installed the new version. I can't see my ship, only the green circle. I can't see planets, just the structures. There is often a lot of weird pixelation in space. I never had a problem with the older version.
I have a Phenom Quad-Core, 3.25 GB RAM on Windows XP, a GTX-285 graphics card. I've tried with AA on and off.

try turning off the new special effects and bloom stuff. maybe thats your issue.
Even with that off, however, there is still a really bad lag issue - er- I mean internet issue.

Try what Az said about turning off the new effects. I had to disable HDR, otherwise everything looked like this...

I've been building computers since about 1978 and rarely update graphics drivers because I've found it often creates more issues than it solves. I'll try Azreal's suggestion first and let me just say:
