So... I heard about the 1.5 release and decided to get a sub (instead of flying around in a corvette getting killed) and start playing again, but I keep on getting insane lag, in the sense that it takes anywhere from 2 secs to 2 minutes for commands to register.
I am running Vista Ultimate x64. AV and firewall are both off. I have opened up ports 9000-9200, selected "Run as admin" and am using the XP SP2 compatibility mode on the *.exe's. My tracerts to cygnus.palestar.com and mv1.darkspace.net all look normal with latencies around ~50 ms. I'm pretty sure that the problem isn't on my side. Help?

When are you getting lag, what are your system specs by way of Processor, RAM, and Video card, and where are you located?

I get lag the moment I start up the game. From selecting a faction to controlling my ship.
System specs:
C2Q Q600 OC'ed 3.0 GHz
2x2GB DDR2-1066 RAM
ATi Radeon 3870
I'm located within the US. I've tried running the game with different resolutions/quality to no avail.

From a discussion today in the lobby with Draf and Fattierob trying to figure out how to get my Windows 2008 server to run DS.. I think we came to the conclusion that DS would run into issues with any 64 bit operating system, at least until a 64 bit version is compiled. I too have vista 64 bit and have endless issues with lag.. but my 32bit XP system runs fine.

I don't know about that. I'm running Vista x64 Home on an Intel Core2 Quad 64bit and I have absolutely zero issues, except when the server is making everybody go wonky. I'm running through a Linksys router. Hell, I've even got DS installed in the Program Files x86 folder & don't have any of the issues others have.

Thats interesting. Prior to the latest release I had no problems on my vista machine. I wonder where the problem could possibly lye? Any possible suggestions for a fix would be appreciated. Here are my machine specs:
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
Processor: Intel Duo Core 2.4ghz (2 CPUs)
System Memory: 2030MB RAM
Operating System: Windows Vista
Video Card: ATI Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series
Video Memory: 789 MB
Internet: 15mbit/15mbit
This computer is outside my router firewall
Located in southern california.. trace route and pings to game servers appear to be normal except when ingame my ping spikes up to 8000's during heavy play [ This Message was edited by: Riley on 2008-10-19 01:14 ]

I'm on DX10 as well Riley, need it for some tools I use & whatnot. In fact, aside from the quadcore (each core is also a 2.4), 4gb ram instead of 2gb, and an nVidia GeForce 8800GT 512mb card we're pretty close specs wise.
How many people having issues like these are using ATI cards vs nVidia cards? Could be an architecture issue.

Thanks for your reply ForFax and i'm not shooting down your suggestion but I am curious to know what factor directx plays in the problem IF the game actually initializes and allows you to play (for the most part)? [ This Message was edited by: Riley on 2008-10-19 01:31 ]

I don't see how a DX10 vs. 9 problem would affect game lag, especially since the program starts up fine and there's no lag until you actually start giving commands/clicking buttons.
If I have to install a version of XP... Grrrr...

DX10 uses a DX9 wrapper. Download and install DX9 (it won't do anything except tell Vista to utilise DX9 instead of the wrapper, which isn't as robust) from http://www.microsoft.com/directx.
See if that helps.
(DirectX isn't just a rendering package - it also includes a lot of functions that are useful in various ways - infact, with newer versions, DirectX expands to incorperate more and more functions). [ This Message was edited by: BackSlash *Jack* on 2008-10-19 10:27 ]

Installed. Rebooted my comp. Seems like there's a new patch/fix of some sort as I'm downloading files.
EDIT: Thanks. Much of the lag has been reduced, but still not at a comfortably playable level. I'm not sure if it's the server or me, at this point. Also something to note, my ping to mv1.darkspace.net is around 150ms now.
EDIT2: The lag is still unbearable. Combat is impossible with the lag. I lagged into death a couple of time. Bah.
