After clicking the shortcut icon, I only get the the intro display with the Lobby, Tutorial, etc options near the top of the page. What must be done to go past this point if using a demo account?

Press the "Lobby" Button
once in the lobby, make sure you press the 'Update' button on the top of the program.
You can ask questions to anybody in the lobby - more then not they'll be happy to help

When I click on Lobby, I only get a popup with client update and connecting to mirror server message. Is the server down? Is one of my firewall settings to problem or do I need to do something else to access the lobby?

If it is closing after the update and you have Windows XP, there is an update that is preventing you from going farther. If this is so, then go to the forum index, then under support go to Client Installation Issues. The first topic on there should be "GCQL crashing after Windows update...." That forum Should have the information you need.
If you have Vista, you have to run DS as an Administrator of your computer for it to work. In order to do this properly, right click the icon and hit "Run as administrator" on the menu. From there it should work and you will have to do that everytime you want to get on.

No, the server is not down - it probably is a firewall problem if it can't connect to the server.
Also, you're probably going to have the windows XP problem when you do connect...
