when i start DS it wants to download an update i let it but the game freezes while downloading.... it freezes when the update progress bar pops up.

It can take a while (up to a minute or so) for the update server to respond/process your update request due to bandwidth limitations.
Make sure you have downloaded and installed the DarkSpace 1.483 client.
Are you able to get to the chat Lobby, or does this freeze occur after first installing the software and running it for the first time?
