its just a unit. we could say something is however many Iso 900-compliant Gyro-stabilized Spanker-o-meters away, and it'd have the same meaning.

It's hard to say since the scale in darkspace is kinda screwy as it is.

Government Unicorn's? <-lol
Goffer Unicycle's? <-lol wat?
Geometric Unit's? <-This makes a bit of sence
It could mean a lot of thing's, But really i think it's just a made up Unit...
It could be a name to...like a person's name.

The actual words that GU stand for are Galactic Unit.

9642.4 GUs equal One AU (astronomical unit, distance from the earth to the sun) OR ~0.0001 AU equal one GU
One AU equals 92955807.2 miles OR one AU equals 149597871 kilometers
thus one GU equals ~9295.58072 Miles OR 14959.817 kilometers
And to put things in to even more perspective lets take a cruiser's speed of 20 GU/s and convert that to miles/kilometers per second (ASSUMING THAT THE SPEED IS IN GUs A SECOND!!!)
so at top speed your going 185900 miles per second, or 299180 kilometers per second...which becomes.....JUST SHORT OF THE SPEED OF LIGHT!!!
Stats are 32532.5 miles a second, or 52356.5 kilometers a second. So a stat is going 17% of the speed of light!!!

It is unbelievable and shows that the scale is incorrect. However this is just a simulation of space and we love it so we forgive such 'artistic license' : )
We all knew this anyway as we all fly on a 2D plane and know that planets move along slightly elliptical orbits, oh and in the solar system Neptune's solar orbit crosses with that of Pluto so at certain times of year Neptune is the furthest planet out. That is not the case with the 'Sol' system map however.
Also, there is no air in space so there should be no sound effects except internal ship noise... er in fact what am I saying...
pew pew, whoosh, bang, navigation, collision alert! Collision alert! Ah man I love that one...
Laters! : )

i built an up to scale solar system in the editor back in the days.
Only first 4 (inner) planets appeared on the navigation screen and it took around FOREVER to jump from the sun to neptune... not to mention my ship was shaking like it had epilepsy (this happend with big maps)

Scales:
1gu = 25'488m
How big should our sun
I estimated how much a gu in m is with earth's diameter

im surprised noone thought of jump drive speeds as a conversion factor.
tachyon JD speed = 2400 gu/s
HMA speed = 2000 gu/s
the desc for HMA says it is a sublight jumpdrive, while TJD is a proper FTL drive.
assuming 2000 gu/s = speed of light
1 GU = 150 m
scouts are therefore 300m across, dreads are almost 4500 m across.
earth's diameter (@hiigaran you measured earth's radius, not diameter) is 500 gu = 75000 m
the harpex missile has a velocity of 70 gu/s = 10500 m/s, just short of the escape velocity of the real earth.
the real space is way too empty and inefficient for playing in. ever imagined spending days at FTL to get to the nearest interstellar jumpgate, just to get killed by a gate-camping siphon lying in wait for 2 years?
the darkSpace is much more compact and better to play in.

I remember someone in the past talking about everything needing to be "To Scale". And Im pretty sure the response was that if we did something like that, our pretty MV would be trimmed down to the Sol System alone because it would take the same amount of time to go from Earth to Pluto as opposed to jumping across the MV in a scaled Darkspace than we currently have now.
Thats what I remember at least =P

anyone notice how the topic was originally on 'what does GU mean'.
and somehow we moved to the scales of darkspace
I just love the darkspace forums. everyone speaks their mind, and shares their opinion.
