Kickstarter is a website where indie game developers bascially ask for donations to either begin/finish or advertise(aka donations for marketing) their games.
Why am I telling you this?
Well, considering the games current *small* commmunity, and having depleted a lot of ideas for basically "free" advertisement, by sending e-mails to popular review sites or popular gamers to make a video of the game or write an article on it.
Obviously, they're not interested due to the age of the game.
The problem is that Kickstarter is for funding projects. So idk how a 10 year old game would fit.
But, I'll leave donations and such other decisions to the dev team.
I'm just offering alternatives for earning money to both support the game and for proper advertising.

Seems like DS needs be be relaunched. Stick a 2 on the end of it's name, call it a new game, and there you have it: it's no longer 10 years old, lol.
How simple or complex such a process is I don't really know...

Kickstarter is suppose to kick start a project rather then finish it.
Even so, DS doesn't need finishing, it's already out of beta as of 10 years ago.

Rewriting the graphics to be a little more "modern looking" (More curves, less boxy and with higher required/recommended hardware to support said graphics) and slapping a 2 on it might do that trick. *shrug*

"Kickstart" an upgrade of DarkSpace would still fit in. Kickstarting a "re-print" of a comic book got over a million dollars, after all.
Indiegogo is a kickstarter alike and even people who blatantly beg for money get moolah there.

It is easy enough to offer various in-game rewards for helping to Kickstart the project.
Special ship skins, an icon by your name, "achievements' etc
