How do you suppose the game would be like if the ships didn't turn like cars?

What if the movement was more like what you saw in Asteroids?
For example, you could thrust in one direction, and then turn sideways, or, you could even use sidethrusters to move from side to side or backwards with less strength than the main engines.

I'm not making a suggestion here, because this would completely change the game play and balance, but think about it.
Would this cause synchronization issues? Would it be too hard to code? Would it make it too easy for you to put all your weapons to a target and avoid damage?

Look at the movement in Allegiance. It has turn torque and friction, it's almost like combat being fought in a low density liquid medium.

A lot of things in the current control scheme don't add up, such as that it takes several seconds to make a change in engine speed, yet you can pull a U turn in 3 seconds.

aha, very funny

I actually made an asteroids game that solved that issue by centering the camera on you, and mirroring everything so that the confines were never an issue... No asteroids would sneak up on you at the edge of the screen.

Already answered by devs some time back.

Faux-newtonian physics = lotsa players crashing into planets and sun. Fun fun fun for the observer. Not so fun for the driver.
