4.2.1 Standard Cannons has some obsolete information.
  • Each shot of plasma causes more damage than each shot of PSI.
  • Total 5 shots in a PSI volley causes more damage than total 3 shots in a Plasma volley.
  • PSI shot speed is much faster than Plasma.
  • PSI and Plasma both have falloff. PSI range is farther than Plasma.
  • PSI recharges more slowly than Plasma does. Plasma drains more energy than PSI.

Clearly, PSI is better in all situation. Stick with it.

Plasma would be better PSI against small ships only when it doesn't have falloff and its speed is faster than PSI.

PSI has 5 projectiles and in total it does More damage then 3 Plasma projectiles at 0 gu Range.
PSI has 220Gu/s speed v/s the Plasma at 160Gu/s speed.
PSI has 660 Gu range v/s the Plasma at 640 Gu range.
PSI has Falloff v/s the Plasma that has No Falloff.
At Cruiser level (5).
A PSI recharges in 3.4 seconds. Plasma in 2.2 seconds.
A PSI uses 0.47 units of energy per recharge. Plasma uses 0.35 units of energy per recharge.(Heavy cannon is double this value)

When to use Plasma?
When you feel like shooting stuff at a range but it won't be able to dodge your slower fire. a corvette or frigate shooting at dreads for example.

Falloff is when damage output decreases over distance, they do more damage up close and less the further away you are. As Eledore pointed out plasma do not have falloff so they'll do the same damage at point blank as they will at max distance. If you want to do point blank engagements then stick with Psi.

Now I didn't know that abt the Plasma. Seems like a good fit for ships like the Krill or Gang when engaging stations at range.

That weapon info box really does a fantastic job of telling you these things.

Compressed antimatter? Magnetic containment? <- Who cares?
No fall off damage? Damage bonus vs hull? <- That is helpful info.

i've used plasma for the longest time and it's served me well despite being slower so the way i see it is, plasma: slower but hits good at all ranges with a little less energy cost.

In database, Plasma has no falloff, agree.
But in technical document published by Fattirob, he wrote:
1 PSI = 319 + (54) + {144 +(20)} - [67 + (99)]
1 Plasma = 409 + (33) + {319 + (19)} - [81 + (4)]
where numbers in square bracket are falloff damage. Then I conclude Plasma has falloff as well.
The point is, Plasma falloff is unnoticeable.
At Cruiser level 5
1 PSI damages 3555 @0gu and 745 @660gu
1 Plasma damages 2343 @ 0gu and 2040 @640gu
Btw

Plasma uses 0.18 unit of energy per second so its cooldown is 0.356/0.18 = 1.97 seconds.
So

or in short, Plasma has higher DPS than PSI does.
Although higher DPS results higher energy draining, but often maintaining energy in ships with cannons is not difficult.

This discovery is amazing! Let's all switch to Plasma as its DPS is higher than PSI.

I'd use Plasmas on Krills. Keep the distance.

Bear in mind you should only use Plasma if you don't intend on trying to hit anything smaller than a Dreadnaught. Against cruisers you might want to stick to PSI, as your chance to actually hit is more important than overall potential DPS.

Personally, K'luth is a close range faction and as such, prefer Psi Cannons for more reliable accuracy and potentially better damage as close ranges.

Really? you mean there are situations in which one weapon ISNT the best all the time? I am shocked, SHOCKED, that a fine upstanding citizen such as Enterprise would DARE suggest that the ability to do the most amount of damage in the shortest amount of time, over time, is somehow any degree LESS important than being able to do any damage at all.
