Would someone who actually knows the numbers give some feedback on what the tradeoffs are between Gauss and Railgun ICC weaponry?

I've asked about it, but pretty much the only feedback is 'Gauss hogs energy, use rails"

If they are indeed energy hogs, surely they must make up for it in some other statistic that's not mentioned? It's not like the weapon descriptions tell you anything useful.

(If I had to guess, I would say that the perk is just higher velocity.. but by how much over rails?)

yea, i was going to answer, but he wants actual numbers.

in most situations rails > gauss
expecialy sence shields already take sooo much energy

Gauss used to be good, but now they're not really worth using. The extra 200 GU of range and negligibly faster projectile speed does not make up for the extra energy use, and the slightly higher ammo does not make up for the lower damage. I used nothing but Gauss for a long time trying to find a good point to them and I can tell you from experience there is almost no reason you'd ever want to use them over Rails.

i can take a wild guess for numbers:

tradeoff in range:
gauss: bout 900-1000, railgun 700-800

damage per volley (not real numbers just comparison, rail=1)
rail :1, gauss: 0,85

damage per hit
rail: 1, gauss 1,35

energy use ( again, in comparison)
rail=1, gauss=1,4-1,5

range
rail=1200, gauss =1400? (donno havent tested lately, either 1400 or 1600)

all numbers are very "ishy" and a very rough guess...but u asked numbers not the textual conclusion people have.

railgun -great range (1225 gu)
-5 shot volley (can hit very maneuverable targets at medium range)
-low energy usage (meant for shooting at high speeds)
-good ammo (96 - [shiplevel*2] )
-good damage
-good shot speed
-good reload speed
-works best with weapon damage enhancements
-focused on constant and stable damage

gauss gun -epic range (185 gu more)
-2 shot volley (getting hit hurts)
-medium energy usage (you need some energy management)
-great ammo (110 - [shiplevel*2] )
-slightly less damage than railgun
-great shot speed (increases chance of hitting small ships at medium range, and big ships at max range)
-average reload speed
-works well with all weapon enhancements
-its a balanced weapon

apparently, since everybody knows these things ill add some derivative things

rails -bigger volley means it begins cooldown after about 0.5 seconds.
-it has more damage, but less ammo means less total damaging capacity, especially in endurance fights and duels
-more damage per volley, but on average the damage-per-second is worse than gauss
-more shots per volley is a symptom that this weapon isnt really expected to have 100% hit rate
-it kills slowly, so its good for players who need prestige (sarcasm).
-its lower ammo and d-p-s cannot keep up well with ships repairing themselves at a depot.
-best used on ships with lots of gun turrets, as bigger volleys can cause >some< damage to small enemy scouts.

gauss -has a damage bonus when hitting hull (at which point gauss is way better than rail)
-range enhancements can let gauss gunboats hit dreads from more than 1900 gu away (ultimate anti-planetcamper, especially if you have interdictor)
-it works well against kluth too (damage bonus negates the AHR repair bonus)
-this weapon, if used right, can be thought to have a pseudo-bonus against armor, because it hurts hard, hurts faraway, hurts always, hurts longer and hurts faster. even a certain specific enhanced version of the gunboat destroyer cannot survive gauss gun attacks.
-best used on ships which have an age-old history of prejudiced combat effectiveness (especially sensor frigates and escort destroyers)

A. Press is give based on damage done. not how fast its done

B. Gauss does not have damage bonus vs hull. (tested many many times and have the code)

C. Horrible to use against kluth, as blind firing with gauss has several disadvantages. The most note worthy of these are lack of spread when sweeping, and lack of a note worthy visual effect when impacting enemy ship.

D. Does not hurt faster. DSP of Rail is higher.

E. can hit from further away, but is easily avoidable at over 800gu by most ships.

F. The "certan" mod of gunboat destroyer your talking about will kill any ship sporting gauss guns, as having gauss guns will force you to choose between Speed and offence, offence and defense, or defense and speed. Railgun sporting ships, for the most part, can use offence, defense, and speed.

Thanks for your openion on the matter though. You sound like one of the old ICC vets returned after many years in the can. Know MUCH has changed.

Only good thing i can say about gauss, is its good to snipe platforms from outside of indictor range at planets, or for out ranging UGTO QST torpedos, which can damage you from the max rang of rail guns(nearly).. for some dumb reason.

Alternitivly equip a couple of gauss guns on your aft firing gunports in order to give yourself manuvering room to turn around while keeping the DPS going. Also, an enemy chasing you will be more likely hit by gauss guns than rail.. but the range of gauss are not the reason.

Over 800gu, cannons are irrelevant, unless its vs a station. Seems to me the added range is just for looks and to use vs stupid people.

Gauss do more damage per shot (2 shots per volly) but rail do more damage per volly (5 shots per volly)
