I been having problems with this name for the task these people do.
Moderator comes from the wordt moderate. theres great - moderate - crap. Moderator would be somebody that makes things moderate. Yet dont moderators make sure things stay great? (like calling a bus-driver a helikopterpilot imo...)
i think the name moderator has been given by players, cause they feel things where great untill the moderator lowered the mood to moderate.
Now, moderator isnt very respectfull of the person executing the task.
I vote for a logical name for these people and their functions.
say: Banlover, Counter target spell (CTS), or awesome-O, or Game-Police

The word moderate can be used as a noun adjective and a verb , in the name moderator it defers to the verb (inf) to moderate. At least that is my understanding, not the adjective form which is as you said great -> moderate ->poor.

I always assumed it was a word derived from 'to modify'. A modifier already being taken for things that modify, the word moderator was created for the man who makes the modifiers.
But that's just what I always assumed,

Moderator. From the Latin moderator (funnily enough), derived from moderor: "mitigate"; "manage"; "regulate".
Someone who moderates; an arbitrator or mediator.
Thus, the moderation staff arbitrate the game venues, ensuring that the rules are followed.
Nothing to do with "moderate" as in "mediocre" or "neither liberal or conservative".
