Welcome to Darkspace!
To capture a planet, make sure you are using a transport ship ("tranny") that is loaded up with infantry units (they appear in the cargo area near the bottom-left of your screen right under your weapon and engine icons. Newly built trannies already come with 2 or 4 infantry units; however, you can pick up more from friendly planets, simply by orbiting them, clicking on individual infantry units and typing L to load them up. At this point, you should see an infantry transport pod coming towards your ship. When it hits your ship, a new infantry unit should appear in your cargo.
Please note: when taking infantry from friendly planets, make sure the total infantry count on that planet does not ever dip too low (under 21 units), or it could be easily taken by enemies.
After loading up on infantry, orbit the enemy planet. If the planet is newly captured and unbuilt, you can simply click on one of the little diamonds on the planets' surface and type U to unload them. This is usually what you'll get at the beginning of scenerio games.
In the Metaverse and at the later stages of scenerio games, most planets have defences built around them, meaning that they have ground-based point defence lasers that can shoot down infantry transport pods as they descend onto the planet. These defences can also shoot and kill you. More sophisticated techniques would be needed to capture the planet (such as close orbiting, bombing, etc.)

Camel said it all.
But i will say it again espacily with "O" for Orbit:
1. Go near to a friendly(green) planet and push "O" for orbit, your ship will now fly to the orbit and stop automaticaly.
2. Now click on the green "Diamond" (center) of the planet and push F3.
3. F3 opens the planet screen. Now you can click on the infantry and push "L" to load them to your ship, or click on the "load button" with your mouse, after clicking on the infantry. Repeat.
4. Now go close to a red or yellow planet(no gas or inferno planet) and drop the infantry with "U" or right-click on your infantry onboard when the U apears (when your close enough).
Now wait, you may also look on F3 again how the infantry is "fighting".
You need more Infantry to beat the enemy troops.
