I am attempting to make new planet textures to help upgrade and better Darkspace; However i require something from the community, and something from the admins (specifically Faust).

From the community:

I need opinions, how planets should look, what should where.

Example; this lava planet is not hot even, this color is offer, it needs more lava, it needs more mountains etc.

From the Admins:

I need to know if you just need the texture's (iei the BMP file) or do you want me to create a 3d profile for the planet in blender.

I am being specific here asking if you want an actual 3d planet completed in blender, or just a 3d preview of the planet.
I just started today so

Also, are clouds something you do, or something i need to do.

lastly, i am posting all the pics on my website @
http://dstextures.guildlaunch.com

Edit: faust i also need to know if you have issues with alterations ot current schemes, like:

Oasis in Arid /baren planets
Islands on Ocean Planets

Most of your planets currently look very artificial.

If you could work on creating some more detailed topography (like mountain ranges and valleys), we might be able to use what you create. We also need normal maps for the textures so that we can start implementing bump mapping.

I would rather have one great texture, as opposed to 10 okay ones.

We don't need models; the textures are just rectangular images mapped onto sphere models. The top and bottom is pinched to fit, so focus your detail on the middle. File types are TGA, but a BMP or similarly uncompressed format works just fine (previews are, of course, perfectly acceptable as jpgs or similar).

Here's a sample image from in-game to give you an idea what to beat:

PS - we also have file size and dimension limitations, but better to ignore them for now as it is much easier to scale down than up.

Ok Great. Thats what i needed to know.

I am sort of playing with the coloring at the moment. The Plastic look is just from the occulation of the star. But i am having problems getting the colors right to make it look less cartoonish and more realish.

I am using a random Generator to creator the planets. in that generation algarythm I am just specifying various factors like colors, land, land generation etc.

Ill play with it some more.

thanks for the tips and samle Pic.

Didn't Crim make some new planet images a while back?

The newer textures are a noticeable improvement. Try working in 2048*1024 though, as we prefer having larger source textures and then downsampling them to what we will actually use (gives us more future proofing).

Keep up your efforts. You are heading in the right direction.

Hey, just wanted to let ya know. I used this tutorial for making planets in 3dsmax for renderings of Earth. It didn't really apply to my subject but was VERY helpful. I think it would be more useful to you than me: http://www.jbud.org/tut01_v1_0.pdf

Yeah, I think I imported a few of them at least. Not sure exactly any more. I think maybe they got deleted for being too awesome (by which I mean too detailed, and thus too large, and thus too much a burden on all those still connecting via semaphore).

You can add the white cloud effect on ice planet. Some forest on Arid.
Nice work. Keep going.
