idead just crashed into my head. what about the asteroids and other objects? like asteroid belts. rokcs that would move around pretty fast. some in orbit other in their own flight vectors trough systems. unability to avoid collison would (obviusly) result in serius damage or death. make the universe a bit more dangerous
oh and one just pooped up, fortress/station/shypyard.. AI ofcourse. could be build ba engineer or two...or five.

um asteroid-belts are already ingame... but tend to get invisible quite often...
at least they were there before the MV-layout-change
had some sugestions to make space more "interesting" myself some time ago (in beta-forum):

well...i never met them, never crashed into them, never got run over by them. this game is missing that type of fun
ps: just checked that link, great ideas. they should really be put into the game. to 'color' up the place, saving us from monotomy of empty space and bunch of balls that are called planets nad stuff [ This Message was edited by: Ravendark on 2010-08-02 06:09 ]

We have asteroids and asteroid belts in code, but they took a lot of CPU time to be floating around space. Plus if you hit one or shot it, it would float off on a new vector (damaging you if it was a collision) and therefore require even more processing. And they'd sometimes float on forever, creating new zones just to process them...
Obviously, most of these problems could have a solution, but it wasn't high on our list of priorities. Plus they could be used to do great damage to planets if properly aimed, which was getting kind of lame to be able to nuke planets with a single object - especially one that the planet didn't react to or shoot down.

There also used to be some interesting ways of combining tractor beams, jump drives and patience to turn asteroids into rather scary weapons of mass destruction, if memory serves.

so then...asteroids will have to wait until everyone gets a better pc and good connection. but idead with nebulas and emp clouds and stuff NoDo came up with are very attractive. i presume that wouldnt eat too much of cpu processes and would make a space more...err...how to say...'good-to-know-the-area' something, ya know what i mean?
