if infantry are ordered to move, they stay where they were ordered to move regardless of anything that happens afterward. if an enemy drops troops on the planet they will not react. you have to order them to go to attack mode (alt-a) for them to do anything again.

if you notice its orders are to move to selected location, and attack would sort of cancel this order, allowing it to attack at will

yes but even after its arrived at the location its still following the order to move there. this is kind of stupid.

well if you think about it if your commander ordered you to move there, you stay there until further orders, right?

yes, but the result is that if you order a bunch of the troops on a planet to move around so it cant be bombed easily, a single infantry drop can take the entire planet because they wont respond to the attack

This is a non-trivial issue, in that having them stand around like lemons isn't too desirable since they need to be able to act if there aren't any players around to coddle them, but making them always move to attack enemy infantry and/or buildings would give them the equivalent of zero attention span since they wouldn't be able to respond to player orders if an enemy was present; the move order would immediately be overwritten by an attack order

So here's my idea for a solution. We keep move orders in a similar fashion as we have them now, in that they are effectively permanent orders. Call it "station". Then, replace the "defend" order with "hold position", "attack" with "engage infantry" and "raze" with "engage buildings". If an enemy unit appears on the planet and the infantry are not set to hold position, they move away from their station point and attack. Once the enemy unit is defeated, they return to their station position. If "hold position" is set, they will sit tight on their designated spot regardless of what happens.

Units that arrive on a planet (either from being dropped or being built by a barracks" can simply set their station point to be wherever they arrive, or possibly a random point on the planet to stop infantry from bunching up too much and getting bombed.

Thoughts?

Moving back to their assigned spot after enemy troops are wiped out sounds like a good idea.

When you move infantry, we assume you want those infantry to move to that spot and stay there. If you want them to be precisely placed to make bombing more difficult yet want them to move and intercept any attacking forces, then you'll need to change their order to Attack once they have moved.

no one wants their infantry to move and then stay there.

I <3 Gej's idea

Would waste many precious CPU cycles to do that.

Somehow you cant build inf with an order already set on them like you used to. I mean build them with Defend or whatever already set, they all come out with attack as a preset.

Also, somehow inf no longer pop up on the barracks themselves, they show up all over the planet. Making it difficult to defend with defenses, but at the same time makes it hard to bomb too. This is a good/bad thing, at least have the inf show up within 2 bands of the barracks. Then they will be close to the defenses should some idiot want to drop raze inf down.
