Hey, its me again. I was interested in getting back into DarkSpace, but I see we still haven't gotten a non-Windoesn't--err--Windows version yet.

Is there any plans for porting to other operating systems?

Oh, yes, I know, I was just hoping I could avoid putting Windows on my Mac. I kind of converted because I was frustrated with Windoesn't.

lol

I managed to run GameCQ through Wine, but it crashed and won't reinstall correctly now since I tried running the actual game.

Oh well. Looks like I'll have to go with Bootcamp.

get a virtual machine...
i run ds in a virtual win7-installation using parallels

the only problem i've encountered so far:
NEVER EVER put your virtual machine into standby you wont be able to play until you restart it

Nelson!

Re: Question, probably not.

And why are you on a... a Mac... if you want something that's unrestricted by software? Apple's whole MO these days is leashing what can be run (and in turn sold through them) on their platforms. I mean, go Linux at least.

Wouldn't we need to switch to OpenGL first? Not exactly my forte, but I think that'd be a necessary first step. There may well be other calls in medusa and such that also need switching; I've never looked at it.

But I think a cross-platform build is not easy enough to manage considering our constraints.

Also Sard, don't be hatin.

The game uses DirectX so is not easily ported to other systems.

But with Bootcamp, Wine, and Cedega available to Mac and Linux users, there are ways to play Windows DirectX games on those systems.

In fact the majority of the games are made for PC's, hence the necessity of Windows Emulators for Mac and Linux.

We've gone over this before, don't expect a port of DS to Mac.

The previous two sentences are the essence of why there's some conflict of interest with a subset of Mac users. You are running a different operating system on the same hardware that every other Intel-based PC sold around the world is using, please don't reek of smug every time you talk about computers. (there's no inherent issues with either OS)

There's a reason why there's poor availibility of video games for OS X, and it's the same reason why there's not too much progress in 64bit browsers...there's no demand, no demand means there's no profit. No profit means...well, there you go. It'll remain this way until it's financially sound to pursue the development.

Be happy that there's plenty of emulation options for you and take advantage of it.

As just a test because we got our hands on some free versions, DarkSpace appeared to run on the Mac using VM-Fusion. Framerate wasn't that good, but i have seen worse.

The real irony is that in the 80's you only had a few games on PC's. Apple computers had all the great games... Then IBM broke through in the late 80's and through the 90's. Now the great games are on IBM PC's, but Apple doesnt really have that many in retrospect.

On a side note, Wine was mentioned in a previous reply. Last I heard, DS (in-game) didn't work with Wine... I did some tests half a year ago and it kept crashing on me with Quartz/Medusa.dll errors. Just sayin'.

Also, for the openGL bit... isn't there a Directx-OpenGL wrapper available which lets you emulate the API calls?
