Until the ROC is revised this is what it says:

3.3.8 Excessive beacon usage
Description: Using beacons to increase a ships signature over 200.

Why it's an Exploit: Large numbers of beacons have the potential to place undue strain on client computers trying to render the overlapping visual and audio effect and may exceed an encoded maximum limit on audio effects which may cause clients to crash.

Elaboration: One beacon is enough to stop a ship from cloaking. A few let it be seen from afar. There's no reason to empty multiple beacon slots onto a single ship.

anyone notice this part if nothing else:

stop abusing the beacon

It is still in the RoC however it should be removed... Only 3 beacons stay attached and it is not enough to raise your sig over 200 (just from beacons) There is a bug that is client side that causes your signature to seem higher than it is... that could be what you experienced

Again, This is a rule made when there wasn't a limit to how many beacons can be attatched to a ship.

plz re-read Jbuds statements, what he says is true.

Any ship can only have three beacons attached.
A beacon has a fixed added signature. (I think it was +15 but that was before 1.5 was released, so could be changed.)

Therefor you will only see three beacons, hear three beacons and notice a signature increase of three beacons..
Even if a enemy shoots 40 beacons at you, untill the first beacons time runs out or he disables them., no new beacons will be attached to the ship.

ROC 3.3.8 should have been removed when 1.5 was released.
Somehow that was not done.
But a lot of things have not been done since 1.5 was released....

Like the manual
/me starts to digg up his txt he should have send to Doran 4 months ago.

The rules of conduct are outdated maybe someone could remove that rule as it no longer applies, it was originally made a rule, if I'm not mistaken, for the very reason that they changed beacons for back in 1.5... It Raised the signature so high and was cumulative enough to crash the server or clients computer. There were changes made to prevent this... In 483 it only took a 2-3 beacons to raise a sig to 200+ in this version 2-3 beacons may raise you to 70-80 signature

Its +20, and yes, the rule is out of date and doesn't really apply. JBud and Eledore are correct in everything they said.

I'll update the RoC later to be more correct.

And even if the game limits it to three, the tests we did towards the end of 1.483 indicated that this was a rare issue anyways. We had roughly... what was it? 200 active beacons? With a dozen or so players watching them, and I think only one person was disconnected due to an unrelated issue.

I thought I'd reply to this since I was the person to make the change during 1.484 (1.5) testing.

The RoC statement was added during 1.483 because some players were abusing the game system in a way that was not designed. The issue caused the DS client to crash to desktop due to it exceeding limits in the way we draw effects.

You can only have three beacons on a ship, when you fire a fourth one, the oldest one will be removed, and the new one applied. So because you can never have more than three beacons on a ship, the limit isn't exceeded, and the problem removed.

Well if you think about it, the rule is still valid. In code only 3 beacons stay attatched... So if you somehow made enough beacons stick to push the sig over 200 then you must be exploiting the beacons somehow...

Just saying... Really think about it...

There is a client side bug, that causes your signature to seem much higher than it is, does exist currently.
I did testing on this bug in the past using beta and two computers it is client side and does not affect your cloaking abilities beyond on your side... (on the K'Luth screen my sig was still dropping to zero, on the other screen it had cloaked and I couldnt target.)
It could be a possibility that it just seemed like the beacons caused it,
when it was in-fact most likely this bug.
