Actually, it's a very bad idea.
Too many issues with relative balance scaling.

who cares about someones cousins father. do something to make planets hurt that doesnt involve making the def bases shoot more stuff

Well lots of ppl are complaining about bad planets, most ppl i know are. And i dont understand the problem that noobs and new ppl will be insta killed when close to planet. This is a learning prosess and if u come to close planet, u die. U learn! and next time u wont go that close.
Atm its redicilus, u cant defend a planet based on what it has of defence. No mather if the planet has 15 def bases or 5 their still easy to bomb. And there is no risk involved goin close to them either.
I want the planets we had in 1.483 just with much faster beams with ugto/kluth.
And when were on the topic i also belive a nerfing to fighterbombing should be done. Atm u can sit at a planet 10k from the planet and bomb very easy.

So give planets their own unique weapons, instead of having them use the same stuff as ships. Then you can balance those specifically for surface-to-ship use.

Yeah, because pretty much at the moment, planets are fluffy clouds. The only reason at all they are irritating to take is because of the way bombing works, but its not hard : one person can take a planet.
But then again, planets aren't nearly important enough to actually make them uber strong at the moment, so, its not really a big issue right now.

The only reason whe care about planets now is that they have SY's on them, not because they have defenses, and then again we really dont need those.

Personally, I liked the old Res system. Although I liked the .480 system far better.
