guys im moving from windows vista 64 to linux kubuntu 64. i actually have only played this game on windows 2000 pro (i have dual boot, new and old os)
when i learned about kubuntu/ubuntu, i was like holy ~#~^&$!^. i think it would be a great idea if there is there any chance we could port this game to linux?
it would attract a lot of players, because although the linux world is small, it is growing and primarily consists of intelligent computer people who would be dying for an MMO better that works on linux. i think the only mmo they have is runescape (as far as i know) LOL
its a whole parallel world of people waiting for a game!!
i think the major differences between linux and windows games is that windows games require directx, whereas linux uses openGL. thats all i know.

by the way, they do seamlessly "emulate" most windows games to work on linux, such as World of Warcraft. but a native linux mmo would probably be extremely popular. most people that use linux are just geeky computer enthusiasts, so even though they are a small fraction of the population, i think we can get a huge chunk of them.

We'd have to re-code everything, and time is an issue as is - so unfortunately, for now, a Linux client is a no. WINE doesn't work, because you can't emulate some of the MFC libraries.

I have to agree with both of you.
Yes a Darkspace under linux would mean more people to grasp the game.
but when i look at last weeks news. a less than 5% in my country use linux as there main desktop OS.
But as jack said the MFC libraries would be one of the problems, and to make them avalable on a *nix OS, would mean a lot of programming/time.
I don't see this comming anny time soon for DS.
O and to add this is not a new subject.
(bad the search function was removed from the forum some years ago.)

Most games are not designed for linux, and probably wont work on wine(though you can always try).
Most versions of linux are free(such as Ubuntu) just download and burn to a disc.

| Yes its got some but that all depends on what kind of distro your using and kernel pack.

| a game that worked on "red hat 6" wil run on "red hat 9". its all about distro and the packages you install with it.

ok there are some that require you to pay for it, but most of them are proffessional or server class.
mostly all other linux versions can be downloaded in .iso format, to burn on CD.
and you can find places where the sell linux in boxed + cd but there price is just to cover the cost of production.

berry linux is nice but so far i only tested it.
I personaly recommend ubuntu for beginners.
later on to try Mandrake & Fedora-Core
And not to forget Suse, Slackware, MEPIS and Debian.

i recommend http://linuxmint.com/index.html to new and old linux users. it will do a dual boot for you i think.
if you design 1 game for linux, it will work for ALL linux distros. the distro is merely how you GET to the OS.
its unfortunate if you all are right and DS will not be ported to linux.
that link i gave you is so much better than a vista OS, you can do anything on it besides play PC games (only because they are designed for slowass windows).....these people will continue to scream out for a native linux MMO, and for similar reasons said here, they will never get one!!
o well. but i made this post selflessly. selfishly i am not sad, because i can play on a dual boot.
my selfish question is, i havn't tried DS on vista, does it work and does it have any issues?
thank you for your time and experience
