Been listening to a series on BBC Radio 4. Its a reading from the book by a gentleman named Tim Guest.
the book is about his journey through virtual worlds, and in todays episode he talked about fraud, and crime and specifically mentioned the game we all know and love. Not Eve or WOW, but Darkspace.
he was inferring that back in 2004 a individaula whose name he quoted but i missed, ( i was driving and trying to drink coffee and roll a fag) (english fag!!!!!!!!) had set up a guild in Darkspace to take hits on individuals and other fleets. And that this was such a success that the Devs got involved. A individual also achieved this in EVE.
Now i was about in 2004 and vaguely remember a fleet offering to do this work, but my memory of it is, that thay flopped. The programme stated that they were so successful that another fleet got butchered. Again if my memory serves me correct the only major fleet that had a large drop in members at that time was Evil, but i though that was due to her majesty, going of to have baby lobsters.
The prog also talked about on line selling of reserves etc, I think the author is getting confused with EVE,
So anybody help me out here.???

I can imagine the influx of British noobs coming in.
Bl4k3r : "Excuse me good chaps, but I wish to inquire exactly how one does fire his primary beam and cannon weaponry on his ship to exact damage to his particular foe at the moment"
Chrl3s : "Have you tried pressing the bar of space? pip pip"
Bl4ker: "Oh thank you very much good kind sir. I shall go try that out right at this very momemnt".
I can also see Backy shooting me for stereoptying so badly at 6:21am.

"In the space combat universe called DarkSpace, he claimed he'd been singlehandedly responsible for obliterating a quarter of the players. He was the leader of a mercenary corporation that made their virtual living destroying other players for profit.
In May 2005 he received an anonymous offer for a Pearl Harbor-style attack on another player's corporation. His client had been scammed by the leader of the corporation and wanted virtual revenge. The cash and merchandise stolen during the virtual attack had a real world value of about £10,000, though instead of selling the virtual booty, they invested in virtual ships.
After news of the battle got out, thousands of new subscribers joined the site. But many of the existing players were outraged.
The victim of the attack had spent over a year building up her virtual empire, but the virtual item she lost had no legal value.
The game's developers decided the attack was in the spirit of the game, after all, it was a space piracy universe."
His name was Istvan Shugatsu, or something similar.

"In the space combat universe called DarkSpace..."
When I search for "Istvan" and "Darkspace", it comes up with a game called Jumpgate.

Sounds like they googled a space MMO and found darkspace and put the name there..
1) we dont take 1 year to build up virtual goods
2) we have no corporation
3) even if such "pearl harbor" attacks happen the community is mostly rather impressed by it *back then i sure was* than outraged. even so a nuked planet was then and is now quickly rebuild with 2-3 ppl

This is HILARIOUS.
Ok, the game they're on about is EVE. But the person they're talking about (Istvan Shugatsu), is actually HELLGREMLIN from DarkSpace. He started DarkSpace before EVE.
Just a little bit of history for you
