it would be so mutch easyer if DS had #nix support.
o wel atleast we can Dream about it, thats not a crime.
for all you vista people
there are already two threads under the Support.
here is a link to one of those two threads.
hope you get DS working soon.

You need to apply administration rights to the following executables:
client.exe
gcql.exe
To do this, find your way to the DarkSpace directory ("C:Program FilesPaleStarDarkSpace" by default), right click on the files (one at a time), and select properties. You will find at the bottom of the General tab (first tab) something along the lines of : "Run program with administration rights".
Once you have done this, Vista will allow DarkSpace to write to the directory (I'm guessing you're not the true root admin of the install, which is common if you purchased a computer with Vista from Dell or someone like that).
Once you're in the lobby, don't forget to hit Update.
@Elenore
The reason DarkSpace doesn't support *nix, is because it requires the MFC library, which is a Windows only library of features. GCQL and part of the DarkSpace client itself require this to run.
However, Faustus was meant to be porting the server over to FreeBSD (variation of Linux), so it might not be impossible if he's able to write the GNU code properly.

Even simpler under the shortcut rightclick and press run as administrator

Well, mister smarty pants, all that does is give DarkSpace.exe administration rights, and is not the one you want, since it neither controls GCQL, nor the client (GCQL.exe and Client.exe respectivly). DarkSpace.exe just controls the intro screen.
If you want to be 100% free of errors, or you don't want the client crashing when you want to take a screenshot, then set gcql.exe and client.exe with administration rights.
You might want to listen to the developer who was the first person to run DarkSpace fully under Vista (and also knows a considerable amount about each).

Jack to the Windows Vista rescue!
Alas I tried to get ds(just the lobby client) to run on wine a while back made a little progress but gave it up doing other crap.
Perhaps a lobby sdk release? I'd like to port a small linux application to connect to the lobby from my linux box or keep it on a thumb drive for when I'm using a linux live disk. That would be sweet.

Ask them to add MFC to Wine.
