Search got removed because everytime someone used it, the game would freeze for 10-30 seconds.
So it's disabled and only for admin use.

Err no..
DS uses an MYSQL server (like an excel spreadsheet for those who have no idea what iti s). What it does is store info. So, out of game, I create my profile. This creates my forum profile, and it's also linked to my game profile. Rather than having two seperate DB's, they just link them, makes things simpler. Now, when I go ingame, the game LOADS the info from the database, and when I exit the game, any prestige I made or lost will be appended to the database. This is then reflected when someone polls a users profile, and the stats get called from the database.
They are simply linked, so when you search the forums (DarkSpace has A LOT of posts here, something like 250k posts, that's a lot of info to store, and the database is probably gigantic because of it. So when searching the database, the ENTIRE thing is searched, so when the game is trying to load info for planets and such, it's having to wait for the search to finish. It's ok when there's not much going on, but in massive fleet battles, just a simple "Jack" search would freeze up the game data. I remember one time when I was trying to build, and the planet wouldn't change, even if I clicked build 100 times. Turns out someone had used the search feature when I was building, and I had to wait for the search to finish before the planet would update. Ofcourse, it only lasted for all of 5-10 seconds, but imagine if everyone was doing it, and the forum is getting bigger all the time, as is the game. Things could only get worse in this aspect, which is why they disabled it.

Could outsource the search to a dedicated company. There are loads of 'google-like' search engines that deal with forums. I found http://www.boardtracker.com/ and http://www.itch.com/ with a quick search, but there are better ones out there.

To give you an idea of the DB size...
Theres something like 9 million indexes created when the DB is installed from backup.

Darkspace could make some extra money if Faustus put the Google AdSense for Search on the front page. He would probably have to fix a lot of links though.
