Okay, im not a computer geek or anything like that but at the moment im on a Sony VAIO, Pentium 4 1.6 Gig Processor 80 Gig harddrive, 512 Memory card, Soundmax Digital Audio System, ATI Radeon 1100, Direct X 9 CD-R/RW, DVD-Rom (both of which are burnt out) and day by day its dying so i've decided to build myself a new one with the parts that my friend Tad is giving to me for under $250....

now, i dont know whats the best computer right now but i was told that an AMD Duron is the best at the moment and heres the specs so far that i have

AMD Duron 3.5 Gig Processor, 5.1 Audio Card, 3Dmax Card or Geforce 4, 180 Gig harddrive, CD-R/RW, DVD-Rom/burner, 1.2 Gig Memory Stick, Windows XP Professional, and a gaming Case with a Coolant thing, i dont know im just not computer smart for my age which is like 26 lol, but the computer im on right now is 5 years old and its dying very slowly and each time i play this game is one step closer to this computers Demise it cant handle the new graphics that were made, or the new sound effects, so with that in mind i need Opinions on what i should get instead of what i want to get bear in mind im a slow learner hehe....

I would advise going for a slighly slower athlon that is sold at the same price as the duron.. will give better overall performance and the price difference isnt that great...
Good idea is to find a site with good performance comparisons along with current pricing.

He;s right, even an Athlon at a slightly lower speed will give you better performance.

Athlon's are the workhorse of AMD.

They offer far superior architecture, the durons were designed for cheap workstations and laptops, although the Athlon-M made the duron obsolete.

Infact, i've never seen a 3.5ghz Duron...

They stopped at 1.8ghz...

You'r probably on about the 3500+ AMD64?

And PLEASE dont get a geforce 4 card. They have NO hardware directx 9, you wont be able to play games like doom3 or half life 2, or any other game that requires directx9 compatible cards to work well.

Go ATI, really, a ATI 9600XT. They are kickass cards, and if you can, get the x600XT instead.

What jack *meant* to say was, While those card literally have no hardware DX9 support, you can still play the games using DX9. They get away with this by mimmicking hardware support with software.

In my experience, when I was using a gf4 card, I had no problems whatsoever using dx9 and no framerate issues.

But before I went out and bought my copy of D3 and HL2(which I subsequently tried to give away and couldn't), I built a new pc.

Edit: Also, you might be better off getting the nVidia card as the ATI if your going for a mid range card, as the nVidia outperforms the ATI card(in my experience anyway). I however wouldn't go for the GF4, perhaps something higher if you can afford it?

o.0 The x850xt is not a midrange card, that's a monster.

becous iff you want my opinnion than i even want to know the motherboard version to let you know if you did a good deal or not.
(just dont reply on that.)

on the otherpart.
i agree whit the guys here.
dump the duron go for athlon.
and buy a decent GFX card. atleast a ATI X700 or above or a GF FX 5600 or a NX 6600 and above.
