Hey Hows it going? Well my son is 10 now and he is using the net and chatting and stuff and I am worried about the sick'os out there and I want to see if anyone knows of a freeware program that would help me moniter what he is chatting about and his e-mails. Something that would keep a Log of his key strokes and be hidden. I do talk to him about the dangers, but I just want to be sure.

hmmm. I can understand your worry. But i am kinda against what your going to try to do towards your son. I wouldn't like it myself if my parents did that to me. But if you insist. I'll reccomend this.

I recomend Cyber Sentinel, good program to keep track and block adult sites ect.

Key loggers are litraly against the law now, as they are used 90% of the time to log credit card numbers and personal info.
What you are doing is invision of privacy, I agree that you should have a certain level of control over how much your son browses the net. There are browser plugins that block pages that include swear words and the like. I will have to talk to my college network admin, they use a pretty good one, although its not without its holes.

Keyloggers are useless for what you're trying to do. They only log keystrokes. So you will only see what he has typed in. You will likely see something like ABCDE[Backspace][Backspace][Delete], etc.
If you're son is ten and is half as smart as some of the youngers I know. He will be able to bypass most sitter software by the time hes' eleven. By the time he's twelve, he will be scripting. There was a kid, I forget who it was that had his own company by age 11. He worked on his stuff after school. I have seen his work, it's amazing.
Or he may not be. Sitter software also blocks out alot of great sites to. If hes into learning about computors or software half the really good educational sites will be blocked to him.
Just like life, you have to take the bad with the good. The internet is full of bad areas and inappropriate content. My best advice would be while he's online would be to sit down with him, help him find whats he's looking for.

It's his 10 year old son.
When I was in my parents' house it was their house, their rules, and their way. When it was time to move out, it was time to move out.
Privacy has very little application for a 10 year old.
I have to tell you, it is amazing how your perspective changes with age....When I was in college I would have made the same statement, Backy. It's just a matter of perspective.

If you have a router go into the Setup by your default gateway address:
found by --> Ms-Dos/Command prompt (start-->Run-->"command")
then type in ipconfig, look for the default gateway address, then type that into your web browser or explorer window address bar, and you will enter the router config, next you will need to find something that says "access restrictions" or something, you can filter out all sites by adding words to block like, porn, ect. In most routers you are also able to limit there internet time by for example turning off the internet access at 1AM-7AM or somethin i guess.
If your son is like how i was, id recommend you set a user and password for the router config console, or he will just change it.
If you dont have a router, u can always use "NetSweeper" which is remote internet administrator which you can use, most school boards use it. But it is not free i dont think http://net-sweeper.com/

I,m a parent so I know where you are coming from my suggestion would be to use AOL as his Surf engine. I do beleive it has like rating you can set the browser to. Also just kinda take a peek every once in a while to see what he is looking at.
Another way without using Keyloggers is to check cookies there you can see the sights he has been visiting.
On a Note to the younger people who thinks it,s not right to invade his privacy. I,m sorry but thats our Jobs as a parent. Until you have kids of your own I can only say you have no clue as to what you talk about.
Sorry but I had to say that. and 10 years old is hardly a age to let his kid roam around the Net freely and un moniterd. I have a 8yrold and 10yr old myself.
Dont knock it until you deal with it yourself.

I think the router idea is great if you have one, to blobk sites/words/etc. Porn turns up in pretty innocent things though, and it is literally only one click away from an accidental or curious word put in a search engine. I would get some sort of shell program, or make it so he can only log in to the PC with limited rights concerning the net. Rather than try and put in sites he can't go to, try the other route and put down ones he can, trying to be as friendly as possible.
Some balance of the two should be fine. Sooner or later, something will get through I bet, so the "Talk" might be in order...but thats not my business. 
The ultimate way to have him not exposed to porn-PLAY DARKSPACE!

well, if u want a good keylogger to go with or despite all these ideas, theres one called 007 Spy Software. It logs all keystrokes, records all folders opened and websites entered, and takes periodical screenshots. Its invisible unless you know the specific keystroke to reveal it. It contains no spyware or anything and works very well. I know this because i required my brother's login password for some innocent things i needed to do.
