I was wondering what video cards folks use, and how the lagg reacts when they play. I am wondering if some of the issues with lag are simply basic user end video issues. There have been times, after hard laggs where everything freezes, and I just say forget it, that when I log, I get booted completely. XP asks me if I would like to send a report, and I do. It tells me that I should look at the video card as the answer to whatever issue I had.

So. I was wondering what ya'll use.

I have a GeForce 5200 256. I have so so lag when in average battles, severe lag when dealing with MDs *cough....ICC hacks....cough*, and CCs *cough...UGGY planet huggers...cough*. Once fighters or mass objects come into the scene, I tend to freeze.

That 5200 Isnt gonna help you much....its pretty much just BASIC.

Go for a X600PRO or XT if you can afford it. If you really want to go far then a nice X800Pro/XT will do better. Using ATI means you might( probably) will get white flare on the mini screen viewer, but as far as performance, the card is ace.

I use the X800XT PCI-E Edition and it runs like a dream. DarkSpace has a few FPS problems (IE it doesnt want to go above 100 at times), and at times when lots is going on, my FPS will drop to about 20. This is only due to the DS engine being like it is however. Its not built for fast machines.

Bare in mind I only get this lag on 1600x1200 on full detail....

I'm using a Radeon 9600SE 128mb (on an Ath2500+ 1GB Ram) and for the most part I'm getting smooth game play.

I'll clarify - I get 70-100FPS in normal play that drops to no less than 50 during heated battles. FPS seems to have no bearing on the lag - especially when it seems to affect everyone equally.

Running an overclocked 2100+xp 1733@1950 here alongside an ATI Radeon 9800pro 128 megs and the fps RARELY drops below 30 in the heaviest scenes with 6x antialiasing and 2x anisotropic filtering at 1024*768*32 with full details. I never CTD or crash at all or even disconnect.

Yet I freeze, get firing/turning lag in the most heated combats ( near a planet cluster, or in a minefield in deepspace etc... usually with fleets around 7/10 on each side ).

56k tho... and some 7 kilometers from the nearest node which ISN'T where the dialup number is directed which is some 25 kms farther...

So all in all, I consider myself lucky, but it's far from 1480.

I'm running with an overclocked 9800XT and my GPU is pretty darn constant at 120. Granted it's in an Thermaltake XASER III case, i've not had any problems with this or prior ATI cards i have owned.
As for the the lag issue with video cards, with antialiasing and anisotropic filtering jacked up i reallly don't see any problems, except when there are alot jumps, mines, and flashy beams at one time, but that is understandable.
I've got a Comcast cable internet connection, the efficient and intelligent people that they are, and i still get lag. Of course that is because my upload in HIGHLY variable in this area. Also, my room mate always seems to want to download alot of pr0n whenever i start playing. I don't think i have really ever played an online multiplayer game, except YAHOO's poolgame, where i didn't experience lag. The internet and it's backbones are fickle beasts and, as such, lag is the nature of such beasts.

The issue with lag is not video cards. It's server-side.

Rule of thumb. If your computer can handle Half-Life 2. Then it can handle Darkspace with 0 video lag.

Nah., I've got the ASUS version with the dual fans and copper wrap around. Damn thing is heavy. Between that and my Swiftech MCX-478 heatsink, 620g, i was afraid my MB would crack in half the first time i sat it up.
