Thats a glib answer, we have all been here between 10 - 18 years, most of us were paying members for most of that time, and were till here even after this game has dwindled into nothing, THATS dedication.

They game should've been back to FTP a long long time ago; where you just have IAPs.
Right after OBT (another lifetime ago) we used to have 2000+ ppl online.
The moment the DS become P2P this crashed, 'hard'.. it's never really recovered afterwards.

The beginning of the end (or at least the final nail in the coffin) was the V12 to V13 change (or was it the V14/15 change?) Anyways, it was the loss of the ability to customize your ship (and we got this current system.....so bad). Weapons were built on a planet and if you captured that planet from an enemy, before he could raze the planet. You could steal tech from them. Like having Pcannons on ICC ships, or certain Kluth tech on ships as well. For the most part the human sides were able to swap tech freely, with the exception of shields on UGTO ships, as they were their own slot entirely, however the armor from UGTO did work on ICC ships. Kluth could use some stuff, but mainly everyone was locked out from using Kluth tech, and vice versa.
Also was the loss of the big MV.
Those two things really killed the player-base and DS has never recovered. Hell during those times the server pop count vanished too, to more or less, "hide" the fact that the game was dying. Server count numbers actually HELPED people back then to find other players, joining a scenario game or the MV when you could see people on, went a long way in keeping players playing.
Oh that was sooo long ago.

Wish i could have played that version . Looks like it was the best and planets had a reason , now capping a planet is meaningless. Defences are useless , dictors on planets doesnt work , so shats the point besides spawning ships ?

The dictors do work, they just work much differently than they used to in that they delay JD recharge rather than restrict it's usage. That change was made because the community requested it.
I do see and understand the level of frustration caused by this change, particularly while trying to build a planet and establish defenses and lately more people than not seem to oppose the change.
I will push a change to github that restores Interdictors to the way they used to be. If it gets approved, it will need to be tested prior to production release so, please be patient. [ This Message was edited by: Riley! on 2017-08-19 20:25 ]

In reply to the original question. The game is over 15 years old (18 if you count from initial development). I don't know of many games, let alone MMO's, that have lasted as long. If they have, they are likely in a similar position.

This is why the game is in the state it is. Sure all the ideas sound great but they are all pure fantasy. The game is very old and there are few games even still alive from when this game was released. Maybe Everquest is the only game still around from those days. It is a tremendous achievement to still be going. The game had a good run but it is old ancient in today's gaming. Most gamers today couldnt be bothered to play Darkspace today. It really doesnt matter what could be done with the game. Even if you suddenly had millions to spend on a proper dev team. Even then they wouldnt accomplish much as it still a 15 year old game. Perhaps if there was money, time and people to develop a new game. That is simply not going to happen. Maybe a crowdfunded option could be possible but you would have to pull out a star citizen for people to even care.
I am not bashing the game all in all you have to admit Darkspace was successful to even still be accessible. Sometimes its just time to let it go.
